July 19 - 21: Days of Action against war on Iran!

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED])

Are you planning an action to help prevent war on Iran?

This coming weekend - July 19 - 21st - groups around the country will be
participating in the Days of Local Action initiated by the Iran Working Group
of
UFPJ. There is still time for your group to organize something. In a memo we
sent you last Friday we made several suggestions. (In case you missed that
memo, a copy of it is included at the end of this message.)

This Friday, July 18th, is the next Iraq Moratorium day. While we certainly
do not want to lose the focus on Iraq, this would be an excellent time to
draw attention to the possibility of an attack on Iran. If you're planning an
Iraq Moratorium activity we hope you will also be saying no to a new war
against Iran.

We also are encouraging everyone, even if you have other activites also
planned, to help build July 21st as a day for people to call their member of
Congress. This will coincide with a lobby day in Washington, DC that Peace
Action
is organizing. We'll be sending more information about this to the full UFPJ
email list, but wanted to give you a heads up on it now.

Please be sure to post any and all activities on the calendar that is part
of the UFPJ website: _http://www.unitedforpeace.org/modinput4.php?modin=50 _
(http://www.unitedforpeace.org/modinput4.php?modin=50) When you get to this
page you'll see a field called Event Type: scroll down on that menu until you
find "No War on Iran Action" and click on that.

We also want to make sure you know about 3 valuable resources for your Iran
work:

1) To assist folks who are interested in sending letters to local
newspapers, here's a sample letter to the editor:
_http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=3916_
(http://www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=3916) Of
course, people should feel free to modify this as needed.

2) Phyllis Bennis and the Institute for Policy Studies have produced a
booklet called Understanding the US-Iran Crisis: A Primer.
This book addresses the new and renewed interest in Iran, answes basicr
questions, and proposes some ideas to prevent another looming disaster of a
U.S.
military attack against Iran. To find out how you can order the booklet,
including information on discounts for bulk orders, call IPS and 202-234-9382,
or
send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mip://048a18a8/[EMAIL PROTECTED])

3) Another important Iran resource is the Iran Daily Opinion Service, a blog
by Michael Veiluva, author of the forthcoming book, Burdens of Proof: Iran,
the U.S. and Nuclear Weapons. The blog address is:_
http://sputnik99.wordpress.com/_ (http://sputnik99.wordpress.com/)

Again, please be sure to post on the UFPJ calendar any events or activities
you are planning for the July 19 - 21 Days of Action! Thanks.

Memo to UFPJ Member Groups - sent 7/11/08

We know you’re busy, and we know it’s summertime. But we hope your group
will be able do something as part of the coordinated Days of Action across the
U.S. on July 19-21. Now, before an irreversible step in taken, is the time
for us to speak out against any U.S./Israeli military attack on Iran.

Momentum is growing as more groups plan events for the three days of action.
If you are not sure what you might do, here are a few ideas:

1) Make sure Congress knows there is strong opposition to military action
against Iran. You can do this by:
    * setting up a lobby visit with the district office of your Senator or
Representative
    * have someone join the lobby day in Washington on July 21st that Peace
Action (a member group of UFPJ) is organizing:
_http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/161/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=1233_
(http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/161/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=1233)
    * organizing people to call in to the DC and/or district offices on
Monday, July 21st
The pressure on Congress is important right now as they consider H.Con.Res.
362. 102 House Democrats and 117 Republicans have cosponsored a resolution
against Iran that demands President Bush “initiate an international effort” to
impose a land, sea, and air blockade on Iran to prevent it from importing
gasoline and to inspect all cargo entering or leaving Iran. Such a blockade
imposed without UN authority (which the resolution does not call for) could be
widely construed as an act of war. Some congressional sources say the House
could vote on the resolution, H.Con.Res. 362, very soon.

We just heard that at least one Representative was convinced by his local
antiwar group to remove his name as a co-sponsor of this resolution! Get the
details here: _http://grassroots.unitedforpeace.org/node/95_
(http://grassroots.unitedforpeace.org/node/95) Yes, sometimes it does work!!

2) Ask your mayor to sign on to a resolution urging the Bush Administration
to pursue diplomatic engagement with Iran. At least 36 mayors have already
signed on – and now is the time to approach your mayor! For more information
visit the Cities for Peace website at:

_
(http://citiesforprogress.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=724&Itemid=1)

3) Join a timely, new initiative by circulating and encouraging people to
sign on to the open letter to Presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama:
_http://www.zmag.org/znet/viewArticle/18096
_ (http://www.zmag.org/znet/viewArticle/18096)
4) Encourage your members to write letters to the editor of your local
papers and to call into local radio talk shows, especially during the July 19-
21
Days of Action.

5) Organize a visible presence in a busy location in your town: a vigil, an
afternoon of leafleting or tabling, a human billboard, etc. Be sure to pick a
time and location that has a lot of pedestrian or vehicle traffic! Locations
might be the office of your federal elected offices or another federal
building, an Israeli consulate, or a local media outlet that has been
particularly
strident about Iran.

VERY IMPORTANT: please be sure to post any and all activities you are
planning for the July 19-21 Days of Action. Just click here:
_http://www.unitedforpeace.org/modinput4.php?modin=50_
(http://www.unitedforpeace.org/modinput4.php?modin=50) When you get to this
form you will be asked to select an Event
Type. Scroll down the list to find No War on Iran Action, and click that on.

Be sure to keep checking the UFPJ website - _http://www.unitedforpeace.org_
(http://www.unitedforpeace.org/) - for new organizing and educational
resources. Early next week we’ll have more materials for you to access.

Peace,
