*man in jail cellAs a former prisoner, I didn't get to vote for anyone....** **that's why I'll be at the Southern California Library's film screening/discussion on resisting incarceration this Saturday, November 15
** *I remember casting my vote back in 1968. The Voting Rights Act had finally gone through, and a lot of us were voting for the first time, in record numbers across the country. I saw on the news that you all showed up again to the polls this year, about 3.5 million in Los Angeles alone--the highest turnout since '68. But some of us weren't there---over 5 million people, either in prison or who have already served our time. And guess what? A lot of us are Black and Brown, the same ones fighting for the right to vote in 1968. It's going to take work to make sure the change we all want happens in the months and years ahead. Just like in '68, it makes a difference when we can all participate. I'll be at the event on Saturday to see Robert King, a freedom fighter who spent almost 30 years in solitary confinement; to break the isolation and be part of a conversation for change. See you there./ /*30 Years of Solitude: Breaking Free of the Cages that Isolate Us * * HEAR ROBERT KING ON KPFK * KPFK radio host Sonali Kolhatkar will interview Robert King on her show, /Uprising/, on Friday, November 14.
