Ode to Thanksgiving

by Marty Lostheart

On this Thanksgiving Day, I am thankful for life
and to be able to share it with my friends, kids and wife.

Everyone celebrates Thanksgiving in their own way
But let's take a look at the original Thanksgiving day.

It was many, many years ago when Pilgrims arrived
and the Native Americans taught them how to survive.

And, in return the Pilgrims gave them things brand new
like measles, cholera, chicken pox, and all types of flu.

They destroyed a great nation and took their land
and killed their families whenever they took a stand.

So, when you give thanks for things this time of year,
I am just grateful that some of my people are still here.

"We know our lands have now become more valuable. The white people think we
do not know their value; but we know that the land is everlasting, and the
few goods we receive for it are soon worn out and gone."

"You who are so wise must know that different nations have different
conceptions of things. You will not therefore take it amiss if our ideas of
the white man's kind of education happens not to be the same as yours. We
have had some experience of it.

Several of our young people were brought up in your colleges. They were
instructed in all your sciences; but, when they came back to us, they were
all bad runners, ignorant of every means of living in the woods, unable to
bear either cold or hunger. They didn't know how to build a cabin, take a
deer, or kill an enemy. They spoke our language imperfectly.

They were therefore unfit to be hunters, warriors, or counsellors; they were
good for nothing.

We are, however, not the less obliged for your kind offer, though we decline
accepting it. To show our gratefulness, it the gentlemen of Virginia shall
send us a dozen of their sons, we will take great care with their education,
instruct them in all we know, and make men of them."

Kings had always been involving and impoverishing their people in wars,

The statesmen will invent cheap lies, putting the blame upon the nation that
is attacked, and every man will be glad of those conscience-soothing
falsities, and will diligently study them, and refuse to examine any
refutations of them; and thus he will by and by convince himself that the
war is just, and will thank God for the better sleep he enjoys after this
process of grotesque self-deception. Mark Twain, "The Mysterious Stranger"

"What kind of victory is it when someone is left defeated? What difference
does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad
destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of
liberty and democracy. What is a war criminal? Was not war itself a crime
against God and humanity, and, therefore, were not all those who sanctioned,
engineered and conducted wars, war criminals? The weak can never forgive.
Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. Non-cooperation with evil is a
sacred duty." Gandhi

"If I were the president, I could stop terrorist attacks against the United
States in a few days. Permanently. I would first apologize to all the widows
and orphans, the tortured and impoverished, and all the many millions of
other victims of American imperialism. Then I would announce, in all
sincerity, to every corner of the world, that America's global interventions
have come to an end, and inform Israel that it is no longer the 51st state
of the USA but now -- oddly enough -- a foreign country. would then reduce
the military budget by at least 90% and use the savings to pay reparations
to the victims. There would be more than enough money. One year's military
budget of 330 billion dollars is equal to more than $18,000 an hour for
every hour since Jesus Christ was born. That's what I'd do on my first
three days in the White House. On the fourth day, I'd be
assassinated." --William Blum, author of "Killing Hope: U.S. Military and

Carl Sagan Quote

"I have -- maybe ill-placed -- a foreboding of an America in my children's
generation, or my grandchildren's generation, when all the manufacturing
industries have slipped away to other countries; when we're a service and
information-processing economy; when awesome technological powers are in the
hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest even grasps
the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas,
or even to knowledgeably question those who do set the agendas; when there
is no practice in questioning those in authority; when, clutching our
crystals and religiously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties
in steep decline, unable to distinguish between what's true and what feels
good, we slide, almost without noticing, into superstition and darkness."

-Carl Sagan 1994

Our Prayer for Peace
Hopi Elders

Great Spirit and all unseen, this day we pray and ask you
for guidance, humbly we ask you to help us to have recourse
to peaceful ways of life, because of uncontrolled
deceitfulness by our humankind.

Help us all to love, not hate one another. We ask You to be
seen in an image of Love and Peace. Let us be seen in beauty, the
colors of the rainbows. We respect our Mother, the planet & our corn
fields, with our loving care, from Her breast we receive our nourishment.

Let us massage away the pain of the two-hearted, the destroyers
of mind, the haters of self-made leaders, whose lusts for
power and wealth lead us into confusion and darkness. Creating
visions always of world beauty, singing away violence, the battlefield.

Our duty is to pray always for harmony between ourselves and earth, so
that the planet will bloom once more. Let us show our emblem of love
and goodwill for all life and land.

Pray for the House of Glass, (United Nations) Pray for within it are
minds clear and pure as ice and mountain streams. Pray for
the great leaders of nations in the House of Mica who in their own
quiet ways help the earth in balance.

We pray the Great Spirit to assist us this day in purifying our
Mother Earth into a healthy peaceful garden. Let us Sing for
strength of wisdom with all nations for the good of all people.

Our hope is not yet lost, purification must be to restore the
health of our Mother Earth for lasting peace and happiness,
Techqua Ikachi -- for Land and Life!

"Together with All Nations We Hold this World in Balance"

Hopi Elders
