According to reports by the Kaleme news site and* **independent human rights
investigators* <http://chrr.biz/spip.php?article10373>, at least seventeen
political prisoners detained in the aftermath of the 2009 post-election
protests were transferred to solitary confinement in ward 240 of Evin
prison. The transfer occurred after the prisoners objected to poor prison
conditions, the behaviour of prison officials, and the ban on visitation.
Reports indicate that all 17 prisoners are currently on hunger strike to
protest the transfer.

Journalists Bahman Ahmad Amouie and Keyvan Samimi were the first prisoners
transferred to solitary confinement on July 26, 2010 at 3:00am.

Detained journalist Keyvan Samimi

Bahman Ahmadi Amouie began his hunger strike three days ago. Five others
including Majid Tavakoli, Abdollah Momeni, and Kouhyar Goodarzi began their
hunger strike the next day. The rest of the prisoners went on hunger strike
on Thursday to demonstrate their support for their cell mates. The prisoners
have vowed to not end their strike until their demands are met. While
seventeen prisoner names were leaked out of prison, there still may be
others in solitary confinement who are also on hunger strike.

Reports also indicate that the phones in ward 350 were cut off to prevent
prisoners from communicating with the outside world so the news does not
reach the media.
