There are two Cuban films and one Cuba-related film at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival now on in Hollywood. There are many other films as well of interest from about and related to Latin America, too.
The principal Cuban film is a feature by Fernando Perez, who previously directed Suite Habana, La Vida es Silbar, Madrigal and many others. It's about Jose Marti when he was a young person first becoming involved in Cuba's struggle for independence. The title of this one is: JOSE MARTI: EYE OF THE CANARY. It has been widely and enthusiastically reviewed inside Cuba. The second is HAVANA EVA, a romantic triangle set in the present, following Fidel Castro's decision not to seek re-election to his posts as head of the government. The third, MEMORIES OF OVERDEVELOPMENT, is about a man who leaves Cuba and finds he's alienated away from the island as he had been while on the island. Somehow I've got the impression this may be in some way about the life of someone like Edmundo Desnoes, who is the author of MEMORIES OF UNDERDEVELOPMENT. I haven't seen any of these films so far. There may be documentaries, but I wanted to get this not out quickly so people living in or near Los Angeles can plan to attend. Tickets are $12 each. I'll send along more detailed blurbs separately.
