Imperial nations advance their own interests by exploiting other societies.
To those on the receiving end this is obvious, while inside the empire, a
powerful ideological system of justification tends to hide all but the worst
excess.
Carl Boggs argues that that the USA began life two centuries ago as a
nascent colonialist regime plundering and conquering the Native Tribes. The
Indian wars were followed by perpetual militarism and warfare fuelled by a
deep sense of national exceptionalism. The Crimes Of Empire examines several
trends in this process, and illustrates the new depths plumbed since 9/11.
Violation of international agreements, treaties and laws and the use of
prohibited weapons, support for death squads and torture are just some of
the practices that Boggs highlights as he shows how technical superiority
and media control prolong the American nightmare.

Endorsements
Distinguished scholar Carl Boggs brilliant historical survey of US
empire-building highlights the centrality of violence, lawlessness and
self-serving "humanitarian" ideology, from colonial times to today. - James
Petras, Bartle Professor Emeritus, Binghamton University
Carl Boggs investigation is relentless, unflinching and irrefutable. This
book performs a genuine service for truth and democracy, an education for
every American.
- Michael Parenti, Author of Against Empire & To Kill A Nation
THE CRIMES OF EMPIRE is the third part of a series of works fundamentally
critiquing the presumed moral superiority of the United States in world
politics. Boggs here takes on the difficult task of asking Americans to
reject the fundamental cultural belief the nation is somehow superior to all
other major powers in the history of the last 200 years. No other nation has
been so afflicted with such self-delusion and no other nation has so
effectively been able to make its citizens genuinely believe in its moral
superiority and intentions never to knowingly injure innocent civilians.
American really believe this (and are likely to continue to) though they
would be far less likely to if they read books such as this. Boggs
devastatingly de-constructs such delusion/illusion, using historical legal
data, the burgeoning human rights literature, psychology, and the vast
literature on 200 years of military, cultural, and economic interventions--
from the domestic war crimes against Native peoples in the 1800s to the
present, over a century of involvements in the Philippines, Latin America,
the long history of the Wars in Vietnam, the wars in Iraq, involvements in
the former Yugoslavia, and Afghanistan. Boggs asks readers to reconsider
comfortable senses of superiority and goodness and to explore the degree to
which the United States is part of a systematic imperial order
enthusiastically and willingly supported by a significant part of the
population who hold beliefs and an ideology-- engendered by mass media--with
components of a fierce belief in national exceptionalism--in the rightness
of U.S. actions above other national actions; superpatriotism; militarism
and the use of military violence; and racism. In this exceptionally well
written, documented, systemic, fiercely critical examination of the U.S.
role in the world, Boggs continues his substantial body of work in the
tradition of Howard Zinn, Noam Chomsky, and Chalmers Johnson's work of the
past decade. Highly recommended. - RAY PRATT, Emeritus Professor of
Political Science, Montana State University at Bozeman

Carl Boggs is a friend. He is the nicest man and very humble as well. He
lives in Los Angeles and has come to many events I have hosted over the
years. On my birthday this year he gave me a copy of THE CRIMES OF EMPIRE. I
finally got around to reading on my flight to Fort Benning for the Annual
School of the Americas Protest. I highly recommend his excellent book. Carl
really tells the horrible truth about U.S. foreign policy. Please support
his efforts and buy a copy of his book at Amazon.com:
