Latest Updates on Leak of U.S. Cables, Day 9

A group of Internet activists who call themselves Operation Payback
launched attacks on Monday on the Web sites of PayPal and a Swiss
bank, which both froze WikiLeaks-related accounts.
On Monday, The Lede continued to update readers on the leak of
American diplomatic cables obtained by WikiLeaks, the
whistle-blowers' Web site. (For an overview of the revelations and

6:48 P.M. |Threats Made to Son of WikiLeaks Founder
Jennifer Robinson, one of the lawyers working to defend Julian
Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, spoke to Australia's ABC radio on Monday.
Ms. Robinson called on authorities to investigate people who have
made public calls for Mr. Assange's death and threats against his
20-year-old son.
Earlier this year, Mr. Assange's son, Daniel, defended his father on
his blog. In a comment responding to a New York Post article based on
comments Daniel Assange had posted on Twitter and Facebook about the
charges against his father, he wrote:
"My comments were very much tongue-in-cheek and not intended as
serious character assessment (nor indeed to be made public in this
manner). I have a great deal of respect for my father and his work,
and no doubt that the accusations against him have no basis in reality."
On Monday, Daniel Assange seconded the thoughts of another Twitter
user who remarked, "To treat Assange as a leaker when he is, in fact,
a journalist is not only morally confusing, it's quite dangerous to
journalists in general."
In the radio interview, Ms. Robinson also told Tony Eastley of ABC:
We haven't even seen a copy of the arrest warrant. What we know
is that an arrest warrant was issued about two weeks ago,
communicated to the UK authorities, and it was sent back on the
grounds that there was an administrative error. I am still trying to
seek confirmation of what that was.
I have been writing to Europol, to Interpol, the British
authorities seeking copies of these various arrest warrants that have
been communicated and none have been provided. We have not the arrest
warrant, we have not the evidence, we have not an allegation in English.
In response to Mr. Eastley's question, "Is that highly unusual?" Ms.
Robinson said, "It is highly irregular. In fact it's bizarre."
Ms. Robinson also said that Australia's attorney general, Robert
McClelland, "has, in a fairly big turnaround, come out and said that
consular assistance will be available and of course we will be
availing ourselves of that assistance."
