*Iran Labor Report*
*This is an abridged version of a longer article that will appear in the
international media.*

Months before the government of Mahmood Ahmadinejad began putting the
finishing touches on its draconian “Subsidies Slashing Program”, a frontal
assault got quietly underway against the country’s struggling unions perhaps
as a sort of preemptive counter-measure.

Starting roughly around the start of the new school year in early September,
threats began to be issued to all trade unionists and labor activists across
Iran against union organizing activities (these threats were mostly
ignored).

Simultaneously, labor syndicalists were detained, jailed terms were added to
those already in jail and general restrictions were placed on all forms of
labor reporting.

The first ominous sign that the new repressive measures were something more
than a passing aberration came in a communiqué issued by the Supreme
National Security Council (SNSC) on October 5. The communiqué which was sent
to all the newspapers and news agencies in Iran, both local and national,
warned against any coverage of labor of any kind. The SNSC which is the
country’s highest decision-making body also gave a warning to the
semi-official ILNA (Iran Labor News Agency) for its previous labor
reporting.

Most experts are of the opinion that a wave of strikes and labor unrest is
sure to follow from the implementation of the massive subsidies cuts.
Already, special anti-riot squads have been created to put down any
potential labor disturbances. Several urban centers have already seen a
massive show of force by these special units in recent weeks. In addition,
the police are issuing dire threats against anyone “disrupting”—i.e.
protesting—the planned subsidies axing and the ensuing layoffs. Some
hardline MP’s have gone so far as to call for death sentence against those
protesting.

More than ever before, international support to Iranian workers and their
organizations could put the spotlight on rights violations and prevent
further law-breaking by the government.
