Dear Friend:
Recently, Senator Lindsey Graham said America should take “bold action” to
“deal with Iran.” Graham asserted that if President Obama “decides to be tough
with Iran beyond sanctions, I think he is going to feel a lot of Republican
support ... Containment [of Iran] is off the table.”
At the same time, Senator Joe Lieberman claimed that “there is a base, a broad
bipartisan base of support [for military action against Iran] if the Commander
in Chief comes to a point where he thinks that’s necessary.”
This saber-rattling foreign policy talk is fueling the push for a military
confrontation with Iran. And make no mistake about it, the Israel Lobby is
manipulating U.S. opinion makers, government leaders, and the American public
into believing that a military face-off with Iran is the U.S. national
interest, and indeed necessary.
This war talk is reverberating despite the disastrous results of the U.S.
invasion of Iraq, which was another agenda item of the Israel lobby.
I saw war close-up as a veteran of World War II. As a veteran of Congress, I
know how and why powerful special interests advocate war. That’s why I’m still
fighting. And I want you to remain on the front lines too.
War has always been a part of the Israel lobby’s strategy. Whether its own
excursions into Lebanon or military actions by proxy—Iraq, Afghanistan, and
perhaps now even Iran—the destabilization of the Middle East always seems to
benefit Tel Aviv.
Today, there is one courageous organization, the Council for the National
Interest, that is holding fast against the influence and agenda of the Israel
Lobby—and taking the message of peace through justice and fair play to a
growing and even more receptive audience.
More than just the worrisome question of Iran, however, the entire agenda of
the Israel lobby—from Washington’s massive military aid to Tel Aviv to the
brutal subjugation of Palestine—requires the Council for the National Interest
to be more vigilant than ever. It’s a job that CNI embraces as a labor of love
… for the American ideals of human rights and the solidarity we have with the
Palestinian people.
In 1989, I was a founder of CNI—along with Congressman Pete McCloskey and a
number of distinguished public policy and foreign service experts. The Jewish
Anti-Defamation League claims CNI “opposes U.S. aid to Israel and disseminates
demonizing propaganda about Israel to academics, politicians, and other
audiences.” Of course we don’t demonize, but as CNI President Alison Weir puts
it: “Describing Israel is always difficult. One can either stay within the
mainstream paradigm, or tell the truth. I will opt for the truth.”
The truth must be told, which is why CNI’s message is urgent. I hope you will
consider a tax-deductible gift of $50, $100, $500 or even $25 to help
underwrite its work. I must stress that we need to hear from you right away:
with a new Congress on its way, the Israel Lobby is working overtime. Here’s
just one example ..
Washington Post columnist David Broder recently opined that “with strong
Republican support in Congress for challenging Iran’s ambition to become a
nuclear power, [President Obama] can spend much of 2011 and 2012 orchestrating
a showdown with the mullahs. This will help him politically because the
opposition party will be urging him on. And as tensions rise and we accelerate
preparations for war, the economy will improve.”
Chilling advice.
That is why CNI is working harder than ever to tell the truth about what the
steady beat of war drums really means. Our voice is crucial as talk about war
with Iran becomes louder and louder.
Sincerely,
Paul Findley
