*Black Women for Wellness deeply concerned over passage of Pence Amendment * **** * * *FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE * * ** * *Los Angeles, CA - February 22, 2011:* *Black Women for Wellness (BWW), a multi-generational organization committed to the well-being of Black women and girls, is deeply concerned by the *U.S. House of Representatives passing of the "Pence Amendment" (Amendment 11), offered by Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) as an amendment to the federal spending bill, on Friday, February 18, 2011. BWW believes this amendment is dangerous to women of color, our families and communities because it would deny *any* Title X funding to all reproductive health organizations that provide abortions. Reproductive health organizations, hospitals and small community clinics that provide HIV prevention services, STI testing, breast and cervical screening and also preventive care for teenagers have become a casualty in this latest round of what can only be called a war on women. It is utterly amazing how this Republican-controlled congress has literally declared war on women and girls by first attempting to redefine rape, then by attempting to prohibit hospitals from performing abortions that would save womens lives, and now by attempting to cut Title X funding that offers preventive screenings and treatment for reproductive health services, stated Jan Robinson Flint, Executive Director of BWW. It is as if they do not have women in their families how did they come to have such disregard for the women and girls of our nation? she asked. BWW stands in solidarity with all the women who would be disproportionately affected by such extreme legislation, as well as those providers who offer such services critical to the health and well-being of our communities, and we call on all U.S Senators - Democrat and Republican - to reject this amendment when it comes to the Senate for a vote. This is a call to action for women and girls and the men in our communities, said Dawn Sanders, Board President of Black Women for Wellness. All of us should be mobilized now that this Congress has shown that they are more focused on controlling womens bodies than on saving our nation from financial ruin caused by unemployment and runaway bank finances, Sanders said. ### *Black Women for Wellness | **3450 W. 43rd Street, Suite 104** | **Los Angeles**, **CA** **90008*** *323.290.5955 phone | 323.290.1542 fax | www.bwwla.com* [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- LAAMN: Los Angeles Alternative Media Network --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe: <mailto:[email protected]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe: <mailto:[email protected]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Digest: <mailto:[email protected]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Help: <mailto:[email protected]?subject=laamn> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post: <mailto:[email protected]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Archive1: <http://www.egroups.com/messages/laamn> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Archive2: <http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yahoo!
