India anti-imperialist and environmental scientist addresses world-wide struggle for democracy and against corporate control of environmental and economic policy. Speaking as the final keynote lecture Sunday March 6, Dr. Vandana Shiva praised the democratic aspirations of the peoples of the world, calling for both economic justice and environmental priority and for personal action motivated by commons interest "to the seventh generation". Time magazine in 2003 awarded Dr. Shiva its annual "environmentalist hero" award. Asia Week has called her one of the five most powerful communicators of Asia. Dr. Shiva singled out the struggle in Libya against dictator Gaddafi as an example of bravery to be emulated by European and American activists in confronting the economic injustice, subversion of democracy and destruction of the environment by corporate-state power.
