Libya behind the news

As we share the exhilaration of Egyptians and
Tunisians whose power of the people toppled
oppressive regimes, we need to take a good look
at the real Libya behind the mainstream media’s
cookie cutter template. When Fidel Castro first
warned that NATO was after Libyan oil, the media
either ignored him or called him, like Qaddafi,
an old fool. But NATO, led by the U.S., does
covet Libyan oil, just as “we” coveted Iraqi oil.

And internally in Libya, the issue is not
economic disparity – of which there is very
little – but race. Yes, race. Many Libyans resent
Qaddafi’s long, diligent and generous efforts to
unify Africa – efforts he is loved for by
pan-Africans. In his Green Book, Qaddafi wrote
that “the Black race shall prevail throughout the world.”

TODAY on Hard Knock Radio, at 4 p.m. March 9 on
KPFA 94.1FM (and archived at kpfa.org), a writer
who lived for many years in Libya and worked
closely with Kwame Ture – aka Stokely Carmichael
– will be interviewed by Minister of Information
JR, who, at the invitation of Cynthia McKinney,
attended Qaddafi’s most recent pan-African
conference in Tripoli in January (see
<http://sfbayview.com/2011/notes-from-tripoli-libya-africa/>Notes
from Tripoli, Libya, Africa). The writer, Gerald
Perreira, wrote a gripping analysis of the
current situation,
<http://sfbayview.com/2011/libya-getting-it-right-a-revolutionary-pan-african-perspective-2/>Libya,

getting it right: a revolutionary pan-African
perspective, that’s been reposted all over the internet.

Once you’ve listened to the interview and read
the story, I think you’ll join us – and most of
the rebels inside Libya – in saying to the U.S.
and NATO, “Hands off Libya!” Violence is hard to
watch, whether in Libya or around the corner in
your hood, but invasion by outside military or
police is not the way to work it out. We need to
understand the real causes, and the Bay View is here to help.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR for the first book reading and
signing of our very own Minister of Information
JR Valrey’s new BOOK – yes, you can own your very
own copy – on Saturday, March 19, 6:30-9:30 p.m.,
at Marcus Books, 3900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way,
Oakland. Chat with the author, and meet Hajj
Malcolm Shabazz and Jack Bryson, who will be there too.

A parade of great events awaits you at the Bay
