Dear Congressman Cassidy and Senators Vitter/Landrieu,
Today Rep. King is having a "hearing" about "extremist" Muslims in America.
I regard this as a veiled threat to people who exercise their First Amendment
Rights. It is really a re-run of Joseph McCarthy's famous hearings about the
"Communist threat" more than fifty years ago, and it is intended to stoke the
fires of hatred, not to shed any light.
I have been married to an Egyptian-American for more than thirty years, and
have been a Muslim myself for the last quarter century.
During that time, I have known socially perhaps more than two hundred Americans
of the Muslim faith. I can state categorically that at NO TIME did a single
one of them suggest any action violent or otherwise, against the United States
of America.
I don't think it was because I am an American. I think it is because, whether
we realize it or not, the US has been very much loved and respected in the
Middle East. People remember how, in 1956, President Eisenhower told the
invading French, British and Israelis to leave Egypt.
We are wasting that affection by our merciless rapes and killings of Iraqi and
Afghani men, women and children.
If the one-and-a-half billion Muslims on this planet have begun to dislike us,
perhaps we need to look at our own behaviors for the clues as to why that is
happening. We cannot continue to support the unrelenting Israeli genocide of
Palestinians, the rapes of Iraqi women, and the NATO bombings of innocent
Afghani peasants and expect them to love us.
They are, after all, human, too.
