Southern California Immigration Coalition

MEDIA ADVISORY: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WHAT: The Southern California Immigration Coalition (SCIC), its ally members
of various LA neighborhood councils, and representatives of the National
Lawyers Guild will report on the outcome of a meeting with the Los Angeles
Police Department on altering their vehicle impound policy of undocumented
drivers to include routine traffic stops -- one of many immigrant-rights
campaigns spearheaded by SCIC.

WHO: Southern California Immigration Coalition (SCIC)

WHEN: Thursday, May 12, 2011

TIME: 5:30PM

WHERE: Los Angeles Police Dept. Headquarters 100 W. 1st Street, Los Angeles,
California 90012
The SCIC, local neighborhood councils, and representatives of the National
Lawyers Guild are once again taking the lead where other immigrant rights
groups are reluctant to address this injustice against immigrants. Recently the
Southern California Immigration Coalition (SCIC) was successful in directly
influencing a change in LAPD’s policy regarding the impound of vehicles driven
by undocumented motorists. (see link below). Currently, undocumented motorists
are given 30 minutes to contact a licensed driver to prevent confiscation at
sobriety checkpoints. Failure to provide one will result in the vehicle being
impound for no less than 30 days, often resulting in exorbitant costs, which
more often than not leads to the owner losing the vehicle. The SCIC continues
to demand that this policy be extended to routine traffic stops involving
undocumented motorists. The SCIC will call for an end on the City’s predatory
practices that net large sums of revenue for the City of Los Angeles and huge
profits for its Official Police Garage tow operators. Information regarding
the success of policy changes regarding the moratorium on vehicle confiscation
in cities such as Oakland, San Francisco and other communities will be
presented.
