Sheriff Swat Team & FBI Raid home of veteran Chicano activist
Press conference Friday, May 20, 5pm at the LA Federal Bldg. (300 N. Los
Angeles St.)
Los Angeles, CA – On Friday, May 20, at 5pm, the Los Angeles Committee to
Stop FBI Repression, the Southern California Immigration Coalition (SCIC), and
allies will hold a press conference to denounce the home raid and arrest of
Carlos Montes, a veteran Chicano activist.
Carlos Montes has been working to stop the FBI and grand jury attacks on
progressive activists in the Midwest that began last September. On the morning
of Tuesday, May 17, Carlos became a target of these attacks himself when the LA
Sheriff’s Department SWAT Team, along with FBI agents, smashed open the door to
his home and rushed in with automatic weapons as Carlos slept. The team of
Sheriffs and FBI agents proceeded to ransack his house, taking his computer,
cell phones and hundreds of documents, photos, computer disks and mementos of
his current political activities.
Carlos was arrested on one charge dealing with a firearm code and released
on bail the following morning. His first court appearance is set for June 16,
2011.
Tom Burke, a spokesperson for the Committee to Stop FBI Repression, said:
“This attack on Carlos Montes is part of the campaign of FBI harassment taking
place against the 23 peace and justice activists which has until now been
centered in the Midwest.” Carlos Montes’ name was listed on the subpoena left
in the office of the Twin Cities Anti-War Committee last September 24. When
Carlos Montes was placed in the LA County Sheriff's car, an FBI agent
approached and asked him questions about his political affiliations.”
Members of the LA activist community will gather at the Federal Building
downtown to denounce this latest round of police and FBI repression, and to
demand that all charges against Montes be dropped.
