PRESS CONFERENCE/PROTEST: Southern California Immigration Coalition (SCIC) to
protest and monitor one of LAPD's “Sobriety” Checkpoints designed to impound
vehicles of undocumented and unlicensed drivers. While LAPD claims they're
after DUI drivers, a whopping majority of their confiscations eminate from
community members not under the influence. Coalition members, local residents
and merchants, as well as sister organizations will be present to alert drivers
of LAPD's vehicle confiscation trap. Legal entities will be present in the
capacity of legal observers.
What: Community organizations to protest and monitor LAPD “Sobriety”
Checkpoint in South LA
Where: Slauson Avenue and Olive Street (This is by
Broadway, right off the 110 exit)
When: Friday, August 5, 2011
Time: 8:00pm
Organizers will be available for interviews

Because of SCIC's effective grassroots campaign against LAPD's abuse on the
immigrant community, the LAPD changed its notorious 30-day impound policy. This
policy adversely affected immigrants who are not allowed to obtain driver’s
licenses by the State of California. The net result was the unjust enrichment
of local government entities. In an effort to increase enforcement statistics
and reduced income, the LAPD has recently stepped up their efforts to impound
immigrant’s vehicles at routine traffic stops.
While deceiving the public about fairness from its change in policy, the LAPD
simultaneously increased its efforts to set up smaller and non-official
“checkpoints” in Latino communities, thus circumventing the requirements
invoked by the Ingersol vs. Palmer (1987) case that outlines the requirements
for sobriety roadblocks. This new strategy has allowed the LAPD to continue
their heightened impounding of vehicles from hard working undocumented
immigrants unjustly enriching the City of Los Angeles, the opportunistic tow
vendors it employs and the State of California to a tune of $40M in 2009 alone.
Mayor Villaraigosa has publicly stated his opposition to the racial profiling
that is taking place in Arizona. On this account we call on him and the City
Council to end this covert brand of racial profiling and attacks on immigrants
in the Los Angeles area. We call on the Los Angeles City Council to enact a
resolution that calls for the City of Los Angeles to adopt the same policy that
is now in place in San Francisco, Oakland, Coachella, San Jose and several
other cities that now permit unlicensed drivers to have licensed driver pick up
their car so that it circumvents a financially overzealous and mandatory 30 day
impound.
If a just change in policy is not expeditiously enacted the SCIC’s will
increase its campaign and its efforts to notice the public regarding the
profiteering activities engaged in by the City of Los Angeles and the Los
Angeles Pollice Department.
