Subject: What the commentators are missing about the Iowa straw poll

So Michelle Bachman won the straw poll in Iowa (with less than 30%). I've
watched MSNBC, CNN, and

FOX and all focus on the Bachman win and ignore the remarkable showing Ron
Paul, who came in

second, one % point below Bachman.

Bachman is nuts but she is an attractive, religious, polarizing figure who
had been expected to win.

Ron Paul, the libertarian, is not nuts, even though I think his economic
ideas are from the 18th century.

I watched the debate and Ron Paul stood out for taking on military spending,
foreign bases, and

even (incredibly) defending Iran's right to pursue a nuclear bomb. I think
he was right on that, even

though it was a strange thing to hear - in fact the problem isn't "Iran
getting a nuclear bomb" - it is

the fact we already have a lot of nuclear bombs in that region (Israel,
Pakistan, India, Russia) and

it was to Ron Paul's credit that he hammered home the hard fact we are
hearing once again the

same warnings we heard about Iraq.

His statements in that debate were, in the context of a highly militarized
society, radical. In the

context of the Republican Party's right wing, which long ago fell in love
with the military, Ron Paul

was a heretic. Yet he came within one percentage point of beating Bachman
for first place.

That is the story the media seems determined not to hear.
