Fall of Tripoli Echoes Loudly in Damascus<http://www.juancole.com/2011/08/fall-of-tripoli-echoes-loudly-in-damascus.html> Posted on 08/27/2011 by Juan Protesters in Syria have cheered on the revolutionaries in Libya, and the fall of Tripoli to a popular uprising last Saturday and Sunday gave new heart to the Syrian reform movement. So far the Syrian demonstrators have been hampered by relative lack of support in the capital of Damascus itself. Damascus is controlled by the ruling Baath Party of Bashar al-Asad. *But early Saturday morning there were calls for demonstrators to converge on the Abbasid Square in Damascus*<http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2011/08/201182743723676965.html>, after an incident sure to inflame religious and sectarian passions. *Syrian troops allegedly surrounded and stormed the al-Rifai Mosque*<http://www.nowlebanon.com/NewsArticleDetails.aspx?ID=305824>in the capital, killing [or wounding] its prayer leader, Usama al-Rifai. There were also significant demonstrations in the Damascus district of Douma and the main square of the suburb of Kafr Soussa. Regime troops attempted to disperse them. Altogether 8 were killed on Friday. Likewise, *Syrian troops surrounded a mosque in the southern, rebellious town of Deraa* <http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/meast/08/26/syria.un/> with tanks and prevented the 2000 worshippers there from coming out after prayers for protests. Since Syrias regime is secular and the upper echelons of the government and the military are disproportionately drawn from the Allawite Shiite minority, the storming of the al-Rifai mosque and killing of its imam is likely to deeply anger Sunnis across the board. If they respond to the call to gather in the historical squares of Damascus, it could be a tipping point in the Syrian movement. *Aljazeera English has video* <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSnoTkfP3Us> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSnoTkfP3Us&feature=player_embedded ** Ironically, the Abbasid Square is named for a dynasty that came to power in 750 AD/ CE as a result of a popular revolution against the ruling Umayyad dynasty. ------------------------------- http://syrianrevolutiondigest.blogspot.com/ Saturday, August 27, 2011 The Incident at Al-Rifai Mosque!<http://syrianrevolutiondigest.blogspot.com/2011/08/incident-at-al-rifai-mosque.html> *In the ongoing struggle in Syria, all sides are on the rope, even those who simply observe the ongoing developments from the safety of their illusions.* *Friday August 26, 2011 * 16 were killed by security forces today in protests across Syria, as the situation on Damascus took a dramatic turn. *Death toll distribution:* 3 in Idlib (2 in Kafrouma, and 1 under torture in Maarrat Al-Nouman), 2 in Deraa/Haruan (Nawa and Mleiha), 1 in Hama (a defector originally from Bosra), 5 in Deir Ezzor (4 in Deir Ezzor City and 1 in Qouriyeh), 2 in Damascus (Qaboun, Douma and Kafar Sousseh), 2 in Homs (1 by a sniper in Bab Al-Sibaa Neighborhood in Homs City and 1 during a security crackdown in the town of Al-Qseir), and 1 in Lattakia (Skantouri). *Links* *Syrians to Assad: Heed the Lesson of Qaddafis Demise<http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/27/world/middleeast/27syria.html> * Qaddafi is gone, it is your turn Bashar!, demonstrators screamed, according to accounts relayed from Syria, which has banned most foreign news organizations from reporting inside the country. Others shouted, Bye bye Qaddafi, Bashar is next!, and Bashar, we dont love you, even if you turn night into day! *Russia Introduces Competing U.N. Draft on Syria<http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111904787404576532921767214848.html?mod=googlenews_wsj> * The Russian text put forward Friday proposes no sanctions, but rather calls on the Syrian government to institute promised reforms and on the Syrian opposition to enter into a dialogue with the government. The opposition has largely rejected calls for talks; a three-day national dialogue conference in July was boycotted by most prominent opposition figures. *Syria unrest: Civilians need protection, says UN<http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-14688718> * A UN investigative team has wrapped up its visit to Syria, concluding that "there is an urgent need to protect civilians" from excessive force. The team, the first Syria has allowed in since a deadly crackdown on protests began in March, said there was no countrywide humanitarian crisis. *Al-Rifai Mosque in the neighborhood of Kafar Sousseh in Damascus remains a hotspot that still flares on occasions. Todays flare-up, however, dissected below, have sparked sympathy protests around Syria for the first time, and might, therefore, prove a catalyst for greater agitation in central Damascus. * *Kafar Sousseh / Al-Rifai Mosque:* protesters were about to take to the streets chanting We dont Bashar http://youtu.be/462uHCkG63U they were instead trapped by security forces and shabbiha http://youtu.be/mrbLiH-_mxY, http://youtu.be/R4mTYFrZqxc who soon stormed the mosque http://youtu.be/-XYbFUFn9u8 , http://youtu.be/CtPvRKpitUs , http://youtu.be/yQye1wHfiao , http://youtu.be/c14R4sA07-c A chaotic scene developed as worshippers scurried to block exits to prevent entrance of shabbiha http://youtu.be/u-v_aTP1wbo and to help the wounded who were it in the courtyard http://youtu.be/0QwUt-lMH7Q , http://youtu.be/F8z1WE1w5fQ , http://youtu.be/3mAhMjX2iqY The aftermath http://youtu.be/A-0YXl720I4Shabbiha chant Abou Hafiz outside the mosque, cameraman enters mosque shows aftermath of attack as paramedics remove the body of a martyr http://youtu.be/IFIyPxKuh2M Eyewitness report that 1 worshipper was killed and 6 were wounded during the attack in which tear gas, electric tasers, batons, plastic bullets and live ammunition were used http://youtu.be/fIO_p20clcA The imam, Sheikh Osama Al-Rifai was reportedly assaulted and injured.
