March 14, 2012 ELA Residents to Protest Heavy Police Patrols and Continued 30 Day Car Impounds! What: Protest Picket of Ongoing Police 30 Day Car Impounds When: Wednesday, March 14, 2011 at 4:30 to 5:30 PM Where: LAPD Hollenbeck Division, 2111 East First Street, LA 90033 Who: Local ELA residents and Community Activists Local residents will picket the LAPD Hollenbeck Division, in Boyle Heights, to protest an increase in police patrols and ongoing 30 day car impounds. Hollenbeck Division conducted a police saturation patrol on Monday, March 12, in the afternoon on Chavez Avenue and Boyle Street next to the busy White Memorial Hospital. Many local residents were caught by surprise in this dragnet, some will leaving the hospital, and received tickets and lost their cars. This comes after the much publicized change in procedure announced by LAPD Chief Beck and approved by the LAPD Police Commission. Immigrant rights activists had warned that the procedure change had not gone far enough to make a real change to 30 day car impounds, which leads to millions in revenue to the Official Police Garages and their political contributions. Residents and activists will point out how the LAPD continues to target primarily Mexican and Central American communities! The Boyle Heights area (part of the greater ELA community) has a high rate of undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Chavez Avenue is a historic much traveled street in the heart of the community.
