*SUPREME COURT RULE ON HEALTH CARE TODAY

*
**
*The Supreme Court ruling on Obamacare should be in the news some time
after 10 a.m. EST, long after we've gone to print.

The best news we've heard is that the Progressive Caucus says
<http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/27/house-progressives-single-payer-health-care_n_1630777.html>
if the individual mandate (the part we fear most at /LUV News/) is
struck down they will push Medicare for all, the easiest single payer
system to describe, since it only requires a change in two words of the
current Medicare system, the deletion of "over 65."

The 75 members of the Progressive Caucus are all signed onto Medicare
for all. It is a shame that President Obama refused to try it when he
had overwhelming majorities of Democrats in both houses of Congress and
could have easily passed it if Democrats were willing.

The individual mandate would lock in people being forced by the
government to buy a severely deficient health care product so that
"health care" CEOs may continue to draw multimillion dollar salaries and
provide transnational investors billions of dollars in profit for
denying health care. The "health insurance" industry loves the concept,
but we at /LUV News/ have opposed profit from pain and suffering, which
we consider to be a barbaric human rights violation as people continue
to suffer and die every day in the Land of the Free.

It is difficult to see right wingers on the Supreme Court striking it
down for any other reason than their hatred of Democrats, since
Obamacare came from right wing ideas at the Heritage Foundation, which
is very close to many of the justices on the Court.

*AMERICA FOR SALE

*
**
*Senator Bernie Sanders said 93% of the new wealth is now going to the
richest 1% (video
<http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/06/27/bernie-sanders-blasts-oligarchic-form-of-u-s-government/>)
leaving 7% for us 99% peasants. He says the American government is now
for sale.

Up to now, apparently, it's only been rented by the wealthy, but with
privatization, in which the rich take over a function of government, gut
it, downsize it, offshore functions, cut worker pay, increase the tax
dollars (now profit) going to it and decrease services the public got
from it, they obviously do own that which corporate media identify as
"our democracy."

**I voted for Jimmy Carter. Carter is known in corporate media for
being the "human rights" president, although his administration was deep
in human rights violations. I remember his starting the Contras in
Central America when the Sandinistas were overthrowing the American
puppet Samoza family in Nicaragua, a group of terrorists who would go on
to commit thousands of acts of rape, thousands of acts of torture, and
thousands of murders, all documented by international human rights groups.

The Carter State Department had bugs in the room when the murder of
Archbishop Ramero was plotted in El Salvador, but didn't warn the holy
man, allowing him to be savagely murdered for standing up to the right
wing death squads that were trained at Fort Benning, GA at the School of
the Americas.

And of course, Carter began the terrorist group now known as al Qaeda,
in Afghanistan, with its religious fanatics like Osama bin Laden willing
then to kill Afghan leftists and Russians who came to their defense, one
of many instances in which terrorists created by our government came
back to haunt us in time

I do admire the Jimmy Carter of recent years, who has often embraced
human rights, but he was not a human rights president, and his memories
of a USA that supported international law and human rights are formed
from deep denial --Jack Balkwill

**In a New York Times (NYT) opinion piece, Jimmy Carter opens with: "The
United States is abandoning its role as the global champion of human
rights."
**

**I read these words and focus on the present tense of "is". And I
think: When was this country ever anything but an imperialist nation?
When was the US anything but an enemy of human rights? And I think
about the blood on the hands of Jimmy Carter whose presidency was a
devastating illustration of inhumanity.
**

**Here's a significant example: It was Jimmy Carter and his National
Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski who were responsible for the rise
of the Taliban and arming and training the mujahideen. Brzezinski wrote
the ending of Carter's State of the Union Address, delivered on January
23, 1980:

**An attempt by any outside force to gain control of the Persian Gulf
region will be regarded as an assault on the vital interests of the
United States of America, and such an assault will be repelled by any
means necessary, including military force.
**

**Afghanistan, in the late 1970s, was a secular country, providing free
education to men and women. And it was allied with the Soviet Union.
When the US recruited Islamic fundamentalists to come to Afghanistan for
CIA training, the Soviets were drawn into war.
**

**The Reagan Administration continued its predecessor's aggression in
Afghanistan.
**

**Carter's legacy includes not only Osama bin Laden and the majahideen,
but, also, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Khmer Rouge, and the Shah of Iran.
**

**Later, after leaving office, Carter, assumed the role of "impartial"
election monitor. He traveled to Haiti after arranging a meeting with
Bertrand Aristide who was running for president of the country and
demanded that Aristide withdraw. Aristide's offense: He was supported
by an overwhelming majority of Haitians and wasn't a puppet of the US
government. Refusing, Aristide went on to win the election but, later,
was ousted in a coup supported by the US. Carter's original choice,
Marc Bazin, backed by the US, was appointed Prime Minister. Carter
defended General Raoul Cedras, a member of the governing junta
responsible for the murder of thousands of Haitians who supported
Aristides, saying, "I believe he [Cedras] would be a worthy Sunday
school teacher."
**

**In 2006, Simon and Schuster published Carter's book, Palestine: Peace
Not Apartheid, in which the recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize
states, "Israel's continued control and colonization of Palestinian land
have been the primary obstacles to a comprehensive peace agreement in
the Holy Land."
**

**I've wondered, often, if this, along with the former president's work
with Habitat for Humanity, is his attempt at redemption.
**

**Carter closes his NYT piece with this call to action:
**

****

**As concerned citizens, we must persuade Washington to reverse course
and regain moral leadership according to international human rights
norms that we had officially adopted as our own and cherished throughout
the years.
**

**It's impossible, though, for "concerned citizens" to make our voices
heard in a "Washington" that listens and is lulled only to and by Wall
Street greed. Certainly, Carter knows this.**
