Weekly Public Class Overcoming Racism: A Radical Approach Monday evenings, July 9 – August 27, 6:30 – 8:30pm Solidarity Hall, 2122 W. Jefferson Blvd., Los Angeles (off the 10 freeway at Arlington on bus lines 38 and 209). Solidarity Hall is disabled accessible. Is racial conflict inevitable in a multi-racial society? Or is it the product of social and economic conditions – past and present – that can be understood and changed? This two-part class will utilize works by writers of color, feminists and radicals to explore these questions and the vanguard role of people of color in social justice movements, including the challenges and rewards of organizing across color lines. Section I: July 9 – July 30, the Roots of Racial Prejudice July 9 – Has racism always existed? The truth can set us free July 16 – Profit and prejudice under capitalism July 23 – Blacks and the unfinished Freedom Struggle July 30 – Autonomy or separatism: Which road for people of color? Section II: August 6 - 27, Bridging the Race Divide August 6 – Feminists of color: Putting it all together August 13 – Immigrant workers: Rekindling the spirit of unionism August 20 – Challenges and rewards of organizing across color lines August 27 – Revolutionary Integration: The people's tool for dismantling the master's house Class fees are $3.00 per session or $20 for entire series.
