What: 44th Anniversary of the East Los Angeles Blowouts & East LA 13
When: Saturday, July 21, 2012 @ 12:00-2:00p.m.

                      1150 Cypress Avenue
                      Los Angeles, CA 90065
Who: Aztlán Reads and Cypress Park Library welcome Carlos Montes,
Cruz (Olmeda) Becerra and others to share their experiences on the legacy of
the Chicano Movement.

Aztlán Reads and Cypress Park Library present a panel discussion on the 44th
Anniversary of the East Los Angeles Blowouts and the “East LA 13” featuring
Chicana and Chicano activists, including Brown Beret co-founders Carlos Montes
and Cruz (Olmeda) Becerra.
In March of 1968, 15,000 students, activists, parents, and teachers held a
series of protests against the Los Angeles public school system demanding
equitable education, the elimination of corporal punishment and the creation of
courses in Mexican American history for all students.
With a growing nationwide interest in Chicana/o Studies and the recent
dismantling, and censorship of Chicana/o Studies, which resulted in a book
banning within the Tucson Unified School District, Aztlán Reads is compelled to
create social awareness and build community support for our brothers and
sisters in Arizona. It is an important time to remember the true spirit and
legacy of the Chicano Movement and its place within American history. This
event will be live-streamed throughout the world
(www.livestream.com/CypressParkLibrary) creating a spirit of community for all
those seeking social justice.
As David Cid, a member of Aztlán Reads states, “It is important to remember the
struggles for social justice by the Brown Berets, such as Carlos Montes and
Cruz Becerra, who to this day continue to dedicate their lives to social
justice.”
Aztlán Reads is a collaborative of Chicana and Chicano writers, poets, artists,
students, educators, and activists committed to promoting literacy in our
communities.
