Free Bradley Manning Action in Los Angeles Saturday, July 14th - Sunday, July 15th & Monday, July 16th
FORT MANNING A Three Day Occupation of the Federal Courthouse in Los Angeles Next to Solidarity Park http://freebradleymanningsocal.com Dear Friends of Bradley Manning, My erstwhile partner Helen Jaccard and I are in Los Angeles, preparing to take part in what promises to be a landmark event in support of Bradley Manning, the accused Wikileaks whistleblower. "Fort Manning," a 3-day occupation of the Federal Court House in downtown Los Angeles. Here is the flyer and schedule of events for Fort Manning: http://freebradleymanningsocal.com This action is initiated by members of the Free Bradley Manning Southern California Working Group, in tandem with Occupy LA and a host of Occupies around the region, as well as several chapters of Veterans For Peace, March Forward, Courage To Resist, the Bradley Manning Support Network, ANSWER and others. Fort Manning will continue with teach-ins at 3 pm on Saturday and Sunday, as well as cultural and other happenings, culminating with a march at 5 pm on Monday, July 16, the same day that Bradley Manning goes back to court for another "pre-trial hearing." This hearing will finally determine the beginning date of Bradley's court martial, expected to be late this year or early 2013. Veterans For Peace is a strong supporter of Bradley Manning. We awarded him our "Courage of Conscience" medal at our national convention in August 2010, three months after the US Army arrested him and accused him of providing classified document to Wikileaks, including the Afghan War Diaries and the Iraq War Logs. At great risk to himself, Bradley Manning shared vital information with the public, for which he now stands accused of "Aiding the Enemy." If convicted, he could face life in prison. In the last week of August, another "pre-trial hearing" will focus on whether Bradley Manning was abused and tortured during his 11 months of solitary confinement, as asserted by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture. At that time there will be International Days of Action to Free Bradley Manning. All VFP chapters are encouraged to participate, and will receive more information shortly. But today, tomorrow and the next day is the time to support Fort Manning in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and Homeland Security have already contacted Fort Manning organizers to raise their concerns about not marching in the streets or blocking traffic. It remains to be seen if they will also challenge the setup of tents and a 3-day occupation, mostly over the weekend. VFP members in Los Angeles and all around the region are encouraged to stand in solidarity with Fort Manning. Helen Jaccard and I will be there, and you are free to call us for updates at: 202-534-9829 (Gerry) or 206-992-6364 (Helen). If you can make it to downtown LA to stand in solidarity with Fort Manning, you will be most welcomed. If you cannot make it, feel free to send messages of solidarity to me at this email address: [email protected] and I will make sure you are heard. Wage Peace!
