SALT OF THE EARTH is a classic of the American cinema. It is based on a strike (ultimately successful) by mostly Chicanos(Mexican-Americans) metal miners at the Empire Zinc mines in New Mexico's Grant country in 1950-52.
It has been blacklisted for years and was only shown in unions, church basements, academia and the like. It is listed by the Library of Congress, though, as one of the 100 most significant films ever made in this country.
