TO "CHAIN REACTION" SUPPORTERS: Just thought I would update you that I am still fasting in support of saving and restoring Paul Conrad's iconic 26-foot-tall nuclear mushroom cloud public art peace sculpture, which was recently designated as a Santa Monica landmark unanimously by the Santa Monica Landmarks Commission.
I began my 10-week liquid-only fast on June 26 ,and will be continuing until September 4, when we will be holding a public candlelight vigil at "Chain Reaction" at it's Santa Monica Civic Center location (1800 block of Main Street) from 5:00PM until 7:00PM. I do hope each of you will attend and help spread the word about this special September 4 event. As most of you might know, it is the second anniversary of the passing of Paul Conrad, who was a most remarkable person and talented artist. He was a 3-time Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times, and his $250,000 gift of "Chain Reaction" to Santa Monica (through a timely and generous philanthropic donation) should be cherished and properly restored. Again, my health is fine. I'm taking a vitamin and mineral supplement. So, please don't worry about me. Let's all just double (or even triple) our individual and collective efforts in support of "Chain Reaction". "Chain Reaction" has been standing in the Civic Center since 1991. The message Paul Conrad inscribed at the base of his most monumental sculpture reads: "This is a statement of peace. May it never become an epitaph." That peace message and that unique and creative sculpture should be fully respected and honored by the great City of Santa Monica. Peace and Gratitude, Jerry Rubin S.O.S.
