Dear Displaced Teachers and Supporters,

Last Wednesday, August 22, over 20 displaced teachers and supporters of
displaced teachers turned out for the monthly UTLA Secondary Committee meeting
from 4:00-6:00 pm.

For the beginning of the meeting the Secondary and Elementary Committees met
together to talk about the upcoming elections in November and the school board
elections which will take place next spring. At the end of this joint meeting
several displaced teachers and supporters stood and held up signs saying
"Enforce Our Contract" and "Defend Displaced Teachers" so that both secondary
and elementary teachers would become more aware of what displaced teachers are
facing.

The Secondary Committee then moved back to its regular meeting room on the 8th
floor of the UTLA building. Over the course of the next hour or so, displaced
teachers asked question after question regarding our displacement and demanding
that the UTLA officers defend our rights and contract.

All in all, displaced teachers and supporters made up almost half of
the meeting
attendees, and because there were so many of us in attendance, we were able to
alter the agenda that was in place. By merely showing up together we
changed the
flow and content of the meeting, and forced the officers to respond to our
concerns.

For starters, it was announced that UTLA Secretary David Lyell has been
appointed point officer for all issues related to displaced teachers.

This week there is another opportunity for displaced teachers to come together
and speak to an even larger group of rank and file UTLA members at the monthly
UTLA Area meetings. The Area meetings deal with issues concerning UTLA and its
members. Typically 80-100 chapter chairs and other UTLA members attend each of
the Area meetings and then take information learned at the meetings back to
teachers at their school site.

UTLA's website has the updated locations for each Area meeting taking
place this
Wednesday, August 29. All meetings start at 3:45 pm and food is provided. Here
was what the UTLA website listed a couple of weeks ago regarding meeting
locations:

Central Area: Manual Arts HS
4131 S. Vermont 90037

East Area: East LA Skill Center
3921 Selig Pl. LA 90031 (3rd floor Aud.)

Harbor Area: White MS
22102 So. Figueroa St. Carson 90745 (White Aud.)

North Area: UTLA Bldg.
3303 Wilshire Blvd.

South Area: South Gate HS
3351 Firestone Blvd. South Gate 90280 (Cafeteria)

Valley East: Byrd MS
8501 Arleta Ave. Sun Valley 91352

Valley West: Monroe HS
9229 Haskell Ave. North Hills, 91343

West Area: Emerson MS
1650 Selby Ave. LA 90024

Check the UTLA website for any last minute locations changes.

When none of us attend these meetings, no one advocates for displaced teachers.
Conversely, our presence at these meetings shows our growing resolve and unity
in fighting to protect our contractual rights, so let's all show up at this
Wednesday's Area meetings and speak to the teachers and union leaders. Ask your
respective Area Chairs for permission to address the group and then let the
group know what displaced teachers are going through.

As we continue to appear at these meetings, the UTLA officers will be forced to
address the concerns of displaced teachers. We can and should apply this
pressure to our UTLA leadership. It is our right to attend these meetings!

Since many of the most recent additions to our displaced teacher contact list
are from South Area (and some may be from Harbor Area), we would love to see a
large number of displaced teachers and supporters at the South Area meeting.

Any UTLA member can attend any Area meeting, but it makes a lot of sense to
attend the meeting in the Area you displaced from or the Area you now work in.
Having said that, contact any teacher you are acquainted with who
would join you
if you need to attend an Area meeting where you don't know many people. Remind
them that many of the recently displaced had no idea what displacement even
meant less than a year ago. All teachers are vulnerable and we have to stick
together. So invite your friends and colleagues to this Wednesday's Area
meetings.

In unity,

The TADA (Teachers Against Displacement Abuse) Group

M. Boyd, Dr. F. Copeland, S. Gersdorff,
L. Karahalios, P. Keller, C. Martinet,
A. Nava, S. Scanlan, B. Stam,
S. Strickberger, L. Woerfel
