Who: The National Lawyers Guild, Southern California Immigration Coalition, members of the immigrant rights community What: Protest and announcement of a campaign targeting Sheriff Baca and the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s for the unfair treatment of immigrant workers. When: Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Where: The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, East Los Angeles Station, 5019 E. Third Street, East Los Angeles, CA 90022 The NLG, SCIC and immigrants rights groups will protest the Sheriff’s Department and announce a campaign to monitor and demand a change to punitive Sheriff’s Department impound policies that target immigrant drivers. The continued seizure of cars, Fourth Amendment violations, and denial of basic due process rights under these policies unjustly criminalize the immigrant community and, in some instances, result in the arrest of undocumented drivers. These arrested individuals, pulled over for offenses as minor as a broken taillight, or sometimes for no documented basis whatsoever, are then at risk for deportation under the Secure Communities program. Sheriff Baca has made it clear he does not think undocumented immigrants have any civil rights he is bound to respect. He has failed to respond to concerns raised by community advocates regarding impound policies, and more recently stated he will not honor the TRUST ACT if enacted. This proposed law would prohibit Sheriff’s Deputies from honoring ICE requests to turn over immigrants charged with misdemeanors to immigration authorities. It is a modest measure that honors the civil rights of people by recognizing that people are innocent until proven guilty and not criminals to be shunted off into the system as soon as they are accused of the most minor violations. Community members and advocates demand that Baca change his policies, respect all immigrants’ rights, and stop his opposition to the TRUST ACT. Impound victims will be present along with those who were put under ICE holds in the Sheriff’s jails and were released due to our advocacy.
