September 2012 United For Peace & Justice Newsletter: Iran and Online
Action time!
Seldom do we have a chance to taste a victory. This one is sweet.
Congratulations to the 50,000 plus people who helped shutdown Stars Earn
Stripes,
the NBC T.V. show that made a game of war. Without you it would continue to
be on television. Your voice and activism made it happen. Never doubt your
power. Please read our message of thanks to you.
As we head into the cold weather of the Fall and Winter, our efforts for
peace and justice are heating up. The Democrats and Republicans will
campaign for the next six weeks claiming to have the right medicine for what
ails
our economy. But they will say little if anything about how Pentagon
expenditures dominate the Federal budget wasting billions on destruction and
killing. This money should be invested in schools, first responders, our
infrastructure and other needs to improve the economy and the lives of
millions.
While they try to divert attention from their never ending wars, the peace
movement will continue to keep U.S. wars visible and push for changing the
federal government’s spending priorities from war to human needs. The
twelfth year of war in Afghanistan will begin October 7. Activities are
planned
across the country to ensure on that day the demand “End the War Now” is
heard loud and clear.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu continues his bellicose rhetoric in an
effort to force the U.S. to attack or support an Israeli attack on Iran. We
are asking people to sign on to and spread the word about the _Iran Pledge
of Resistance_
(http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=ciK1lS1wIKRsGXdD1E1l9SscPt8njLaq)
. We demand no attack on Iran. We are also
educating and organizing for a nuclear free future led by efforts for a
nuclear free Middle East.
This only touches on the work of UFPJ member groups and peace activists
across the country. Thank you for your continued support. Together we are
forwarding the cause of peace and justice and we are making a difference.
In the Struggle
Michael T. McPhearson

Stars Earns Stripes Cancelled!
Sending Congratulations and Many Thanks to the 50,000 peacemakers who
signed RootsAction.org petition calling for an end to NBC’s Reality Show “
Stars Earn Stripes” -a show that distorted the reality of war. NBC has ended “
Stars Earn Stripes” with no intention of renewing!
We are eternally grateful that Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Jody Williams,
banded together with 9 other Nobel Peace Laureates to send a letter to NBC
demanding they cancel this show.

ISRAEL, IRAN, AND NUCLEAR MADNESS
The rage of Benjamin Netanyahu is beginning to become a bore.
And his supporters, particularly in the United States, are carving a
new standard in well-to-do, over-educated, arrogant ignorance. These
people want the United States to go to war with Iran today, or
tomorrow, or maybe we should have yesterday. Soon is not soon enough.

Iran Call for Nuclear Weapons Abolition by 2025 is Unreported
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), formed in 1961 during the Cold War, is a
group of 120 states and 17 observer states not formally aligned with or
against any major power bloc. The NAM held its opening 2012 session yesterday
under the new chairmanship of Iran, which succeeded Egypt as the Chair.
Significantly, an Associated Press story in the Washington Post headlined,
“Iran opens nonaligned summit with calls for nuclear arms ban”, reported
that “Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi opened the gathering by
noting commitment to a previous goal from the nonaligned group, known as NAM,
to remove the world’s nuclear arsenals within 13 years.

Help Put Up Billboards Against War with Iran
The threat of a military strike on Iran is back in the headlines this
month. An attack by Israel on Iran would cause a dramatic spike in the cost of
oil, threaten U.S. forces in the region, and unravel the P5+1 coalition
possibly ending all hope for a negotiated settlement.

IAPMC Petition for A Nuclear Weapons Free Middle East
The New York Times has reported that the US has been reinforcing its
already large military presence in the Middle East as a leg of its
negotiations
with Iran over the claim that Iran is building “nuclear weapons”. This is
exacerbating an already tense and volatile situation. Coupled with
economic sanctions, it adds to the fires burning in the Middle East, a real
threat
of another Middle East war with wide spread repercussions.
Peace loving people must speak out!

Why I am Going to the Women's Congress
Eighteen years ago, a year after my mother’s death, almost to the day, I
was diagnosed with cancer, Hodgkin’s Disease. When my mother passed, she had
lymphoma. Five years prior to my diagnosis, my Dad died, after a long
battle with Melanoma. It metastasized to his brain.
All that cancer so close to home was my wake up call. I knew something was
wrong, and I knew it couldn’t just be genetics. Maybe the lymphoma was
connected to Hodgkin’s, but what had Melanoma to do with my cancer or with my
mother’s? _Read More_

Occupy the TPP: Civil disobedience at Trade Negotiations
Lansdowne, VA – Two people were detained this morning after a tense
stand-off with police while blockading international trade negotiators from
entering the Lansdowne Resort, site of the secretive Trans Pacific Partnership
negotiations taking place this week. Other activists greeted the arriving
international negotiators with a 75-foot high banner suspended by weather
balloons shaped like giant buttocks that read “Free Trade My Ass: Flush the
TPP.” 1. _Read More_

No To 5 More Years of Wiretapping
The House of Representatives will be voting on a bill that would extend
the NSA's warrantless wiretap program for another 5 years.
Tell them NO!
Congress passed the FAA (FISA Amendments Act) in 2008, in effect
legalizing President Bush's controversial warrantless wiretap program. Four
years
later, we know almost nothing about how the FAA has been implemented or about
the scope of the surveillance that's being conducted under the Act. .

Tell Congress Cut the Pentagon and Save Vital Services
Powerful forces want to prevent Pentagon cuts and preserve upper-income
tax breaks - and some are more than willing to cut human needs funding to do
it.
If large numbers of organizations nationwide sign this letter, we show our
urgent concerns about threatened cuts, and show our champions that "we've
got your back."
On the other hand, your silence means lobbyists for military contractors
and the Pentagon and for upper-income interests have a clear shot at getting
their way.

Stop the Deportation of Kimberly Rivera
On September 20, my husband and I, and our four young children, could be
deported from Canada. Across the border, I would be taken into custody,
separated from my family, and likely put in a military prison for years: all
because I opposed the war in Iraq.
My name is Kimberly Rivera. I joined the U.S. Army when I was 24. At the
time, I thought the war in Iraq was a good thing. I thought it would make
our country safer and bring democracy to Iraq.
