Hi. I cannot more highly recommend this film, based on Juan Gozalez's book.
Yesterday, Juan and one
of the two film makers were on Democracy Now for its full hour cast. They
covered the history, economies
and politics of the centuries of domination by invading countries, led in
the past century by the U.S., on
behalf of ever larger corporate interests and feudal land owners and an
imposed order by fascistic, compliant
dictators. The result of massacres in El Salvador, regular invasions by the
U.S. military, taking a third of
Mexico, the entirety of Puerto Rico, and violently overthrowing democracies
from Haiti and Honduras south
to Brazil and Chile have resulted in enormous numbers of refugees from Latin
America fleeing to the U.S.
Wouldn't you.
All that is background to the main thrust of the book and the film, of
what's happening here and now with
all those millions. They showed some of the footage, and it was incredible.
A must see ***** (Hey, I'm in
show biz - sort of) - Ed

HARVEST OF EMPIRE

The Untold Story of Latinos in America

We are all Americans of the New World, and our most dangerous enemies
are not each other, but the great wall of ignorance between us.

  Juan Gonzalez, Harvest of Empire

At a time of heated and divisive debate over immigration, Onyx Films is
proud to present Harvest of Empire, a feature-length documentary that
examines the direct connection between the long history of U.S. intervention
in Latin America and the immigration crisis we face today.

Based on the groundbreaking book by award-winning journalist Juan Gonzalez,
Harvest of Empire takes an unflinching look at the role that U.S. economic
and military interests played in triggering an unprecedented wave of
migration that is transforming our nation's cultural and economic landscape.

Where Making History Is a Struggle

What Kind of Times Are These
By Adrienne Rich

There's a place between two stands of trees where the grass grows uphill
and the old revolutionary road breaks off into shadows
near a meeting-house abandoned by the persecuted
who disappeared into those shadows.

I've walked there picking mushrooms at the edge of dread, but don't be
fooled
this isn't a Russian poem, this is not somewhere else but here,
our country moving closer to its own truth and dread,
its own ways of making people disappear.

I won't tell you where the place is, the dark mesh of the woods
meeting the unmarked strip of light—
ghost-ridden crossroads, leafmold paradise:
I know already who wants to buy it, sell it, make it disappear.

And I won't tell you where it is, so why do I tell you
anything? Because you still listen, because in times like these
to have you listen at all, it's necessary
to talk about trees.
