Dear Blues Friend: Our Heart of the South Tour II is around the corner, and
I can hardly wait!

For those observing the Days of Awe, a happy and prosperous new year, with
wishes for global peace and understanding.

Regarding the Blues Blast Music Awards, although "Sittin' on the Right Side
of the Blues" did not win the popular vote, I feel gratified that through
the competition many new people became familiar with our music, and Mike and
I cannot thank you enough for your support.

We head back South full of enthusiasm and fully intent on laying down some
heavyweight blues. We've played almost all the venues previously and are
pleased to be invited back. One new date deserves mention: We'll be the
featured performers at Mr. Handy's Blues Hall on Beale St., Wednesday 10/10,
in a benefit for the Blues Foundation's intended Blues Hall of Fame. Vinny
Marini, host of "Music on the Couch", will host the evening.

Here's our tour itinerary:
Friday 10/5 King Biscuit Blues Festival 11:00, Helena
Sunday 10/7 Huey's Midtown 4:00, Memphis
Monday 10/8 Hopson's Commissary 6:00, Clarksdale
Tuesday 10/9 Blues in Schools & Concert 6:00 BB King Museum, Indianola
Wednesday 10/10 Blues Hall of Fame Benefit 8:00, Mr. Handy's Blues Hall,
Beale St., Memphis
Thursday 10/11 Cat Head Blues & Folk Art 3:00, Clarksdale
Saturday 10/13 Guitar Workshop 10 am & 6:00 Festival set, Bukka White Fest ,
Aberdeen

Before we go I have a couple of dates this weekend.:
Saturday, September 29
My good friend Jill Hill is opening her new Long Beach salon this Saturday,
September 29 with finger foods, beverages of various kinds, and...the Blues!
I'll be playing from 1:00-3:00, and I hope you'll join us. See the PDF
attached above for details.
Goldhill Salon Grand Opening, Saturday, September 29, 1-4PM, 4358 Atlantic
Avenue, Long Beach

Sunday, September 30

The following day, I will be playing with the Bernie Pearl Blues Band at an
Ash Grove-sponsored benefit for the Get-Lit Players. We will play an opening
set, and then will have the honor of backing one of the most inspiring
vocalists I've ever heard in all my decades of music, Ms Bettie Mae Fikes. I
played with her in the 1960's and have had the opportunity again more
recently. Take it from me, you don't want to pass up a chance to be
enthralled by this voice, and in a lovely garden setting!

ASHGROVE MUSIC BACKS LIFE SUPPORT FOR LITERACY

Benefit Helps Get Lit Players Keep Culture Alive for At-Risk Youth

The Get Lit Players have built a launch pad for literacy among at-risk youth
with innovative programs that blend memorizing classic poetry and original
free-form spoken-word slams. Many minority teens on the edge of dropping out
have regained self-confidence and reconnected with reading through exposure
to great poets of diverse cultures and the prospect of becoming poets
themselves. Semi-finalists in the 2008/2010 Brave New Voices International
Teen Poetry Slam, the Get Lit Players have been featured in the LA Times, on
HBO, NBC and PBS and were invited to the White House by Michelle Obama last
year.

All Funds from this event, sponsored by Ashgrove Music, will bring Get Lit
to Animo Inglewood High School, where desperate teachers welcome this life
support. They know that arts -- the oasis where students can find their own
voice -- are the prime reason many young people remain in school.

While last fall's Get Lit benefit featured a poem written specially for the
event by David Mamet and performed by Helen Mirren, this event will showcase
the Players themselves, plus performances by their outstanding musical
confreres from Brave New Music.
