"Wild Horses & Renegades" • Director: James Kleinert

"This is not just a film about wild horses; it is a film about what is
happening to our planet at the hands of corporate greed". Michael Blake, author
of Dances With Wolves.

"Wild Horses & Renegades" features Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Viggo Mortensen,
Raoul Trujillo, Daryl Hannah, Dances with Wolves author Michael Blake, former
New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, U.S. Congressmen Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), and
Pulitzer Prize winning author Scott N. Momaday. There is nothing more symbolic
of the freedoms of America than the wild horses that make their home in the
wide open spaces of the West. Under 'federal management', these horses and
their pristine environment are being devastated due to corporate interests in
mineral extraction and cattle grazing.

Both an animal advocacy and an environmental protection issue, the debate on
the failed management of American western federal lands, and the underlying
role of corporations, has become a growing national embarrassment. With
stunning vistas and interviews with notable contributors, "Wild Horses &
Renegades" brings to light the people fighting to save these animals and our
environment from extinction.

"Opening Our Eyes" • Director: Gail Mooney

This is not your typical "activist film" but an inspirational story that will
leave you empowered to do good and do more! How many people does it take to
change the world? Every day all around the world, ordinary people are doing
extraordinary things. Mother/daughter filmmakers, circle the globe on a 99-day
journey, seeking people who are making a positive difference in the world. They
find remarkable people who are showing the world how to inspire others and
create positive change. This film tells the stories of eleven change makers on
six continents who are making our world a better place, including: Maggie - a
19-year-old who built a home in Nepal for 30 orphans, David- a physician who
trekked into Thailand's remote northern hill-tribe villages to offer medical

"Amazon Gold" • Director: Reuben Aaronson

Narrated by Academy Award winners, Sissy Spacek and Herbie Hancock, "Amazon
Gold" is the disturbing account of a clandestine journey bearing witness to the
apocalyptic destruction of the rainforest in the pursuit of illegally mined
gold. Two journalists who normally cover war and human rights issues travel
along Peru's Madre de Dios River to reveal the savage unraveling of pristine
rainforest. Left in the wake of almost surreal images of once extraordinary
beauty turned into hellish wasteland, "Amazon Gold" reaffirms the right of the
rainforest to exist as a repository of priceless biodiversity and not as the
toxic remains of man's greed for gold.

ACCOMPANYING SHORTS:

Americas, is a national treasure being squandered by greed. Actor-advocate Ed

"The Well: Water Voices of Ethiopia" • Director: Paolo Barberi

A visually stunning film told through the words of an ancient shepherd, the
viewer is guided through the life of the Borana, a semi nomadic population in
the south of Ethiopia that struggle perennially for survival. During the long
periods of annual drought, the Borana life revolves around ancient perpetual
wells, the only resource against the tragic effects of global climate change.
Every day the young shepherds form human chains to reach the great depths of
the wells and fetch life giving water. Their hard work is stressed by a chant
that draws their great herds, who after days of walking in search of pasture
are finally coming home to drink at the singing wells.

elements and avoid isolation as he fights for a sustainable future.

"What Do Polar Bears Dream While They're Dying?"
Director: Arthur C. Smith III

A wildlife cinematographer adopts the Arctic as home and discovers that what's
really killing polar bears is already killing people! Environmental poisoning
and the loss of habitat, health, and home unjustly deny life its future.

story on the fate shared by polar bears and people alike.

" It's a Girl Thing: MKA, Tween Queens and the Commodification of Girlhood" •
Director: Shannon Silva

Since the birth of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in 1987, the girls' tween market
has evolved from almost non-existent into a $43 billion-dollar-a-year money
making machine. Framed by the structure of a faux interactive website, "It's A
Girl Thing" speaks with consumer critics, tween brand marketers, girls, moms,
and educators to explore the seemingly benign cultural universe of
pastel-colored, hyper-commercialized girl culture (and the tween queen
phenomenon) to reveal the complex and contradictory messages being hurled at
today's young girls... tomorrow's women.

"Horse & Rider: A Journey Towards Freedom"
• Director: Ben Stamper

"Horse & Rider" is a non-conventional look into an increasingly conventional
industry of trafficking minors for sexual exploitation. Shot on location in
India, this narrative traces the tangled memories of two survivors of child
prostitution, and the NGO that is working for their restoration back into
society. Award-winning Director Ben Stamper draws heavily upon monumental
cinematography and a lush musical score to explore the complexities of rescuing
minors from brothels and their subsequent journey of healing and reintegration.
"Horse & Rider" is a film that leaves commentary to the audience as it presents
the tragic and the heroic dimensions of the human condition with an imaginative
lyricism and beauty.

ACCOMPANYING SHORTS:

"Walking Merchandise" • Director: Ethan Downing

Five children tell their stories: from leaving their homes in China and being
trafficked to the USA by their own families, to working in restaurants across
the country. They are joined by social workers and journalists to depict their
struggles, and the global forces that have brought them to America.

"What I Have Been Through is Not Who I Am"
• Director: Kelley Matheson

Katrina's childhood abruptly ends when she is sold to a sex trafficker. Her
compelling story demonstrates that victims can become not just survivors but
advocates in ending the abuse of our children.

"Bidder 70" • Director: George Gage

"BIDDER 70" centers on an extraordinary, ingenious and effective act of civil
disobedience demanding government and industry accountability. In 2008,
university student Tim DeChristopher committed an act which would redefine
patriotism in our time. In order to save 14 pristine parcels of land in Utah
(totaling 22,500 acres) from environmental devastation and corporate interest,
he single-handedly outbid a group of investors at a public auction. In an
interesting turn of events, DeChristopher was removed from the auction in
handcuffs by FBI agents, taken into custody, and ultimately sentenced to two
years in prison. This ignited a spirit of civil disobedience in the name of
climate justice that spread across the country. Follow Tim, "Bidder 70", from
college student to incarcerated felon. Redefine justice for yourself.

ACCOMPANYING SHORTS:

"The War Around Us" • Director: Abdallah Omeish

In the winter of 2008 Ayman Mohyeldin was the only American living in the Gaza
Strip. When the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was broken and the first
bomb dropped on Gaza, Mohyeldin and fellow journalist and friend Sherine Tadros
found themselves the only Western reporters there to capture it. This film
chronicles the bonds of friendships under stress, the ethics of journalism in
conflict and above all, the resilience of humans during war. With
never-before-seen footage and testimonies reported from one of the most
dangerous places on earth, the film bears witness to how Gaza powerfully
changed them forever. A poignant film from Abdullah Omeish, a returning
Artivist Award Winning human rights filmmaker.

Orzechowski / Decipher Films. Equal parts found-footage mash-up, verité
investigation, and artful meditation, the film charts the lives of both humans
and non-humans who have experienced animal testing first-hand, with hauntingly
honest testimony of scientists and lab technicians whose ethics demanded they
choose a different path, as well as the simultaneously heartwarming and
heartbreaking stories of animals who have seen both sides of the cage. MTD aims
to re-ignite the debate about animal testing by bringing these rarely-heard
perspectives to the fore.

"Creating Freedom: The Lottery of Birth"
Director: Raoul Martinez and Joshua Van Praage

Our starting point in life is one of passive reliance on forces over which we
have no control. From birth onwards our minds are a battleground of competing
forces: familial, educational, cultural and professional. The outcome of this
battle not only determines who we become, but the society we create. Imagine
two enemy combatants on a battlefield. Suppose it were possible to go back in
time and swap them at birth, so that each baby would be raised in the other
culture. Is it not inevitable that each would end up fighting for the other
side -- fighting for a different flag, a different religion, a different
ideology? The film uses this thought experiment as a starting point to explore
the following questions: Do the forces that shape us serve the interests of
those doing the shaping? If we're simply a product of biological and
environmental influences, can we be free?

ACCOMPANYING SHORTS:

"Admissions" • Director: Harry Kakatsakis

Starring Academy Award nominee James Cromwell, this is a transformational tale
about what it takes to find lasting peace, even in war-torn places like the
Middle East. A modern parable set in the "Admissions Room" of the afterlife.

"Lez-Bien" • Director: Ever Jeylina

Reflections of a lesbian who represses her sexuality because of family and
social pressures.

"Kindness Boomerang" • Director: Orly Wahba

A short film about the enduring domino effects of something as simple as
"kindness".

ABOUT ARTIVIST:

The ARTIVIST Film Festival & Awards was founded in 2003 as a charitable 501c3
organization headquartered in Los Angeles. Our mission is to raise awareness
for international human rights, children’s advocacy, environmental
preservation, and animal advocacy through international films.

More than a film festival, we guide the public “From Awareness to Positive
Action” by providing informative films that inspire action; we then connect our
audiences to dozens of NGOs where they can participate in positive change.

In 2012, the UNITED NATIONS officially accepted the Artivist Film Festival and
Awards as a member of the United Nations Department of Public Information.
Among the 7+ million NGOs operating worldwide, only 1,322, (less than 1%), are
affiliated with the United Nations DPI. The Artivist Collective, Inc. is now
the only NGO within the entire DPI whose main program is a Film Festival.
