Events focused on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are held worldwide on and around December 10. Many events aim to educate people, on their human rights and the importance of upholding these in their own communities. The day may also include protests to alert people of circumstances in parts of the world where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is not recognized or respected, or where the importance of these rights are not considered to be important. Cultural events are also organized to celebrate the importance of human rights through music, dance, drama or fine art. On Sunday, December 9, 2012, we will begin our observance of Human Rights Day by a staging a protest at both Wells Fargo and Bank of America. We will set up an all night occupation of Wells Fargo bank in solidarity with Niko Black, a terminally ill indigenous womym cancer patient who was kicked out of her home by the Orange County Sheriffs department and Wells Fargo bank officials in violation of a federal judges order to not evict her. We will also stage a protest at Bank of America. Our theme will be Housing is a Human Right! Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control Article 25, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Banksters continue to steal our homes through deceptive and predatory lending practices. Foreclosures continue to displace people and create homelessness. The number of empty lots and abandoned houses grows where houses and residents were once packed in a tight community. Foreclosures are having a multifaceted negative impact on communities and threaten to undermine strides made by local organizations that have increased homeownership, lowered crime and made communities healthy places to live. There are a total of 174 homes going into foreclosure in one zip code in Van Nuys! The impact of foreclosures on our communities has been nothing short of horrific. The result has been communities suffer from increased crime, communities take financial hits in the reduction of their annual budgets, communities members are vulnerable to financial scams, youth experience stress and instability, displaced residents struggle to find shelter, communities are blighted by neglect and people of color have been those mostly disproportionately impacted by the foreclosure crisis. As a result of this Criminal Activity perpetrated by the Banksters and other lending institutions, the American Dream has now become for millions of homeowners an American Nightmare. Homeowners, renters, and the homeless have joined forces and have mounted a resistance against the Banksters, and to reclaim our communities from these parasites. We are committed to resisting any and all attempts to unjustly deprived people of their homes and will continue to FIGHT BACK JOIN US!
