PEACE ACTIVIST JERRY RUBIN BREAKS "SAVE CHAIN REACTION" HUNGER FAST AFTER 24 WEEKS Santa Monica, CA- Longtime peace activist Jerry Rubin remembers the last spoonful of food he had just before he began his liquid-only "Save Chain Reaction" hunger fast in support of restoring 3-time Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist Paul Conrad's iconic 26-foot-tall nuclear mushroom cloud "Chain Reaction" public art sculpture, that has been standing in the Santa Monica Civic Center since 1991. Rubin recalls it was a spoonful of Ben and Jerry's ice cream. So, when Rubin broke the personal fast he began on June 26, and ended it today on his December 11 birthday- as a birthday gift to himself-, the first sold food he consumed was a fork full of red velvet birthday cake with chocolate frosting that his wife Marissa fed him at an afternoon public fast-breaking ceremony next to the now landmarked sculpture. Rubin began his fast there 24 weeks ago by chaining himself to the huge chain link artwork. At the birthday fast-breaking ceremony, Rubin shared birthday cake with a dozen other "Chain Reaction" supporters. After blowing out the birthday candle atop the cake that had been decorated with blueberries to form the familiar peace symbol, Rubin told the group that he couldn't divulge his birthday wish, but that he was certain they could probably guess just what he was wishing for. Rubin pledged to continue working with the Conrad family, the community, and the City to restore and strengthen the monumental sculpture that bears the timely and important message Conrad inscribed at it's base: "This is a statement of peace. May it never become an epitaph." Rubin also urged others to make tax-deductable donations to help the City with the cost of the sculpture's restoration, and urged people to visit ConradProjects.com if they can help. Paul Conrad gifted "Chain Reaction" to the City of Santa Monica through a $250,000 philanthropic peace donation. It is now the City's first public art landmark, designated unanimously by the Santa Monica Landmarks Commission at their July 9 meeting. The Commission last night also unanimously finalized the addition of a nice sized parcel of land surrounding "Chain Reaction" to go along with it's previous landmark designation. Paul Conrad passed away on September 4, 2010 of natural causes. The Santa Monica City Council is expected to revisit the "Chain Reaction" issue at their February 12, 2013 public meeting. #### [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- LAAMN: Los Angeles Alternative Media Network --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe: <mailto:laamn-unsubscr...@egroups.com> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe: <mailto:laamn-subscr...@egroups.com> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Digest: <mailto:laamn-dig...@egroups.com> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Help: <mailto:laamn-ow...@egroups.com?subject=laamn> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post: <mailto:la...@egroups.com> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Archive1: <http://www.egroups.com/messages/laamn> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Archive2: <http://www.mail-archive.com/laamn@egroups.com> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yahoo!
