Stop DOE's radioactive metal "recycling" scheme!
NIRS has issued an alert against a scheme to "recycle" vast quantities of
radioactive metal from across the nuclear weapons complex into the consumer
product recycling stream. NIRS asks, "Will the next zipper on your pants be
radioactive? How about your silverware?", and explains: "The Department of
Energy wants to mix radioactive metal from nuclear weapons factories with clean
recycled metal and let it enter into general commerce--where it could be used
for any purpose. It's a foot in the door for revival of a vast--and
discredited--radioactive waste deregulation plan defeated in 1992." You can
submit your opposition via NIRS' quick and easy web form, or use their more
extensive talking points to write your own comments. Comments must be submitted
to DOE by Feb. 11th. More

Victory! Endangered species contention moves forward
An environmental coalition opposed to the new reactor targeted at the Great
Lakes shore of southeast Michigan has fended off repeated nuclear utility and
NRC Staff attempts to nix its Eastern Fox Snake contention. Along with the
coalition's quality assurance and Nuclear Waste Confidence challenges, and
likely more contentions to come, the resistance against Fermi 3 remains strong.
