Please Support the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Today!
In 2012, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was not reauthorized. VAWA has
been expired for over one year. Two weeks ago, U.S. Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
and Michael Crapo (R-ID) introduced a bipartisan reauthorization bill that has
received co-sponsorship by 62 senators. The bill ensures protections for
underserved communities and supports the needs of domestic violence prevention,
awareness and treatment services. American Indian and Alaska Native
communities are among the underserved groups. There are important Native
provisions in VAWA that ensure victims are better protected from violence.
Sens. Leahy and Crapo’s bill (S.47) has the support of advocates, law
enforcement, victims and victims groups. Now is the time to add YOUR voice to
the national call for justice for women. Please contact both of your U.S.
senators and tell them you strongly support the VAWA reauthorization that
includes the Native protections (a Senate vote is imminent).
Urge your senators to support the tribal provisions of S.47, and to vote NO on
the Coburn Amendment, and support the Leahy Amendment. Through their
leadership they can make VAWA happen in 2013.
Call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask the operator to connect
you to your senators’ offices. If you don’t know who your senators are, you can
look them up here. When you’re connected to their offices, tell the person who
answers the phone:
* I am a constituent from (city and state) and my name is _________.
* I urge Senator____ to support S. 47, including the tribal provisions.
* I urge Senator _____ to vote NO on the Coburn Amendment, and support
the Leahy Amendment.
* Thank you.
If you prefer to e-mail, you can do so through the web forms for each Senate
office provided here.
Let them know where you stand! Thank you!
