"Long Distance Revolutionary - A Journey with Mumia Abu-Jamal" To be Held Over at Laemmle Music Hall Theatre in Beverly Hills
Message from Film's Director Stephen Vittoria Hello Organizers and Some Cool Journalists and Broadcasters, "MUMIA: Long Distance Revolutionary" was the #1 documentary at the Los Angeles Box Office this past weekend. Pretty incredible when you think about the competition & marketing budgets we were up against. Audience response was engaged & passionate. Our weekend was so good that the Laemmle Theater chain has extended the film for another week at the Music Hall on Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. So here comes the pinch again: we need your help to continue to drive folks to the theater. We think we can continue the push vast numbers of folks from various organizations did not make it to the theater. We need to urge them again to see this inspirational and remarkable story of the "Long Distance Revolutionary" - Mumia Abu-Jamal. The crowds came from various promotional efforts: organizations like the Labor Community Strategy Center, the Bus Riders Union, LA-IAC, LA Progressives, the African Artists Association, Rise of the Dandelions, Greedy City, Turning the Tide... and then of course on-the-ground grassroots organizers, as well as the more traditional promotion through advertisements, articles, broadcasts, and then finally the all-encompassing world of social media. But the bottom line is this: as well as we did, as many folks that did show up and engage with Mumia, the turnout did not match the true potential. Even amongst folks that were vocal about their desire to see the film, we know there isn't always the same sense of urgency about going to a theater as there is about going to a rally. But going to see this film is, in a very real way, very much like going to a rally. It's just that this rally doesn't happen on just one day - it keeps going and we need supporters of Mumia - those who want to see him raised in the public eye and with fairness - to keep going to the theater. The message this continues to send cannot be understated, nor the impact it can have for Mumia in the court of public opinion and, in the long term, on the causes to which he speaks. This is a big for instance: today, I received an invitation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences to supply my script for their library to be part of the permanent collection. Mumia with the Oscar people. This is the kind of positive thing that happens when a maligned figure such as Mumia is elevated to a proper stature. People are noticing. How can you reach out to your contacts & network with a reinvigorated message to express that this is more than going to see a film? Our suggestion - convince them that it's a revolutionary action. Mumia's remarkable story is playing all this week and then we start again on Friday, March 8th for a second week - through Thursday, March 14th. Encourage folks to bring a friend, bring two friends. Ask them to see it again. And the film is not opening in Santa Monica until March 16 - and we do not want folks waiting for the geographic preference. Pasadena and Claremont are still in play on the early weekend shows but our clear-cut preference is Beverly Hills: Laemmle's Music Hall 9036 Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills www.laemmle.com/viewtheatre.php?date=03052013&thid=4 Also, please go to Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB and rate the film - we need numbers. Thanks for all your love and support. Now, after more than 30 years in prison and despite attempts to silence him, Mumia is not only still alive but continuing to report, educate, provoke and inspire. Stephen Vittoria's new feature documentary is an inspiring portrait of a man whom many consider America's most famous political prisoner - a man whose existence tests our beliefs about freedom of expression. Through prison interviews, archival footage, and dramatic readings, and aided by a potent chorus of voices including Cornel West, Alice Walker, Dick Gregory, Angela Davis, Amy Goodman & others, this riveting film explores Mumia's life before, during & after Death Row - revealing, in the words of Angela Davis, "the most eloquent & most powerful opponent of the death penalty in the world...the 21st Century Frederick Douglass." www.freemumia.com - www.prisonradio.org [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- LAAMN: Los Angeles Alternative Media Network --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe: <mailto:[email protected]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe: <mailto:[email protected]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Digest: <mailto:[email protected]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Help: <mailto:[email protected]?subject=laamn> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post: <mailto:[email protected]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Archive1: <http://www.egroups.com/messages/laamn> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Archive2: <http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]> --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yahoo!
