Hi Tom,

I didn't hear the broadcast(s), and so have no idea of what the two very
different people Mumia Abu-Jamal and Eric Mann actually said; but I do have
something to say about Lincoln, with whom Marx maintained correspondence (see
http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/iwma/documents/1864/lincoln-letter.htm ).

See
http://po.org.ar/blog/2013/02/21/la-guerra-civil-norteamericana-y-la-clase-obrera/
(The North American Civil War and the Working Class).

See http://po.org.ar/blog/2013/02/21/la-segunda-revolucion-norteamericana/ (The
Second North American Revolution) (including references to "Lincoln, the movie")

Since I have differences with your empirical approach to politics in general,
Tom, I would like to translate the last few paragraphs of the latter article:

"Obama is not Lincoln"

"In 1864 defeat was looming for the South. Lincoln, reelected, pushed for
entering abolition into the Constitution, so that it could not be overturned by
individual state laws. In order to gain the required two thirds of the votes,
he made a pact with the radical abolitionist wing (Stevens) in support of an
amendment granting freedom and legal equality to slaves. Real social equality,
to which reference is made in the film, included an agrarian revolution.
Lincoln uses all means, including the purchase of votes, in order to gain a
majority. Congress welcomes the fact that the radicals give in on the
confiscation of land for distribution. The 13th amendment is a compromise.

"At the beginning of the tape, two black soldiers tell Lincoln: "Today, we only
stopped being slaves. Tomorrow, there will be a black colonel. Then blacks will
vote ". [But] Obama is not leading any revolutionary war, but instead predatory
imperialist wars.

The United States, in the fable, has been through two revolutionary wars. It
can, then, live through a third."
