~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Law Causa Presents ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ * * * 2nd Annual Law Causa Student DREAM Scholarship * * * # # #"SHARE"### Los Ángeles, CA On April 10, 2013 Law Causa will begin accepting applications for our second annual "Banned Books" Scholarship, which will support one undocumented/dream student on course to a legal education at The People's College of Law. The Banned Book scholarship, recently created by Law Causa in collaboration with the Peoples College of Law (PCL), is dedicated to the memory of Ilka Tanya Payán, a PCL alumnus, attorney, prominent actress and AIDS activist. LAW CAUSA Law Causa is a grassroots community service organization that is committed to advancing issues of social justice by empowering and inspiring students of color and underrepresented communities to pursue a career in the legal field. We assist activists and community members of Los Ángeles with admission into Law School by providing insight, referrals, popular education, and resources. PEOPLES COLLEGE OF LAW PCL was created to bring legal resources to under-represented communities and train legal advocates who will secure progressive social change and justice in society. Our goals are 1) to train advocates for human rights, tenants' rights, women's rights, LGBTI communities, consumer rights, workers' rights; to fight discrimination, economic and political oppression, abuse of power, and 2) to enable and empower those who have been historically denied legal resources and protections. ### SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS: Traditional legal institutions have mass-produced lawyers whose concept of lawyering consists of an elite organization dedicated to maintaining the national political-economic-social status quo, as well as the lawyer's superior position in it, by serving the rich or acting as legal functionaries for the State. Law Causa aims to help facilitate the next generation of lawyers who will serve communities of color and neighborhoods which have been historically disenfranchised in the realm law. If you want to become a deputy district attorney or work in the legal department of some corporation, don't waste your time and ours by applying. There are other scholarships for you. Law Causas goal is to empower and inspire underrepresented communities to enter the field of law by demystifying the law school admissions process through popular education, community events, tabling scholarships and more. One of the communities we work with are Undocumented Youth also known as the Dreamer Movement. We believe that by empowering Dreamers to enter the field of law, graduate, pass the California State Bar and become Peoples Lawyers we can empower the next generation of conscious litigators and create substantial change in the legal systems that govern our society. For this reason we have created the 2nd annual Law Causa Student Dream Scholarship to benefit those we believe will make a real difference. Last year we raised $2,000 and were able to help 2 deserving students pay for tuition at the Peoples College of Law. Our Dream Scholarship will pay for 1/2 years tuition to the Peoples College of Law, a small fully licensed degree-granting, Juris Doctorate program. This scholarship will be given to one student who can demonstrate a commitment to social change (see application). As of now we have raised nearly $2,000half of one years tuitionand are eager to accept applicants for our Fall 2013 scholarship.
