NRC to webcast May 2nd public call to close U.S. Fukushima-style reactors
On Thursday, May 2, 2013 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm Eastern Time, the United States
Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will webcast and telephone conference link
its meeting with representatives from communities challenging the continued
operation of thirty-one Fukushima-style reactors here in the United States. The
groups along with now more than 2,250 co-signers have petitioned the federal
agency for the closure of the GE Mark I and Mark II boiling water reactors
because of the unreliable containment structures that are vulnerable to
catastrophic failure during a serious nuclear accident.
The NRC is meeting with the public Thursday, May 2, 2013, from 1:00 pm to 3:00
pm (Eastern Time), in the Commissioners’ Hearing Room in NRC Headquarters,
Rockville, Maryland. The NRC will provide 300 toll-free telephone lines at
1-888-603-9750 and enter Passcode 5506147 for the general public and interested
media to listen to the groups’ arguments for enforcement action. The NRC will
also broadcast the public meeting in a LIVE video webcast.
You can sign-up to be a co-petitioner with the Beyond Nuclear call to revoke
the operating license of these dangerous Fukushima-design reactors.More

US making plutonium for risky space launches
US-made plutonium could power the next NASA space probe, despite the obvious
risks that could expose at least 5 billion people on the ground to radiation if
an accident occurred. The plutonium is being made at the Oak Ridge (TN)
National Laboratory, ironically the site of a dramatic break-in last July by
three pacifists - Michael Walli, Sister Megan Rice and Greg Boerje-Obed
(pictured L to R) who face trial beginning May 7 after throwing blood on the
Highly Enriched Uranium Facility. Protesters continue to rally at the site in
opposition to a proposed new weapons uranium processing facility. More

ANA 25th anniversary "DC Days" a big success!
Scores of participants from across the country conducted over 100 lobby visits
to Capitol Hill and Obama administration offices, of which Beyond Nuclear had
the honor of being tapped to "team lead" at several U.S. House and Senate
offices. A highlight of "DC Days" is the annual awards reception. This year,
activists Bobbie Paul of Georgia WAND and Judith Mohling of Rocky Mountain
Peace and Justice Center, filmmaker Kathleen Sullivan, author Kristen Iversen,
attorney Diane Curran, and U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) were honored for their
work. More
