Despite its problems, KPFK has always been right on the spot when rewarding its
subscribers with premiums. I say this from experience: the person in charge of
premiums has always been easy to reach, and has even sent me premiums I
requested that were not publicized during that fund drive.

As opposed to WBAI.

If you go to the Premiums page at wbai.org, http://wbai.org/premiumform.php ,
you will see a statement that due to Hurricane Sandy, they are a little behind
in sending out premiums, so expect a wait of 6-8 weeks.

Well, I sent WBAI a donation on February 9, in the name of one of my favorite
programs, which was offering a premium I just couldn't pass up. Three months
later, my premium has not arrived. Several times in March, April and this
month, I tried calling the original pledge line, the premiums hot line, the
premiums coordinator, and even the station general manager. Nobody ever got
back to me until a few days ago, and that seemed to be a form email message:
"Your complaint or request (!) has been heard, and is being investigated."
(emphasis mine)

This morning, my favorite program was on again. They were offering a different
premium this time, but the premium was on a timely and interesting topic that
any fan of that program would love. They were desperate for money, though, and
not doing very well. People just weren't calling in like they normally do.

DUH!!!!!!

If the other listeners are like me, they are probably still expecting the
premiums they were promised the last time they pledged. So why pledge again?

WBAI is undermining its own shows and its own fundraising by not sending out
premiums. And yet their programmers' appeals grow more desperate: We'll be
kicked off the Empire State Building transmitter, they say. This is a crisis,
it's never been this bad, they say.

Well, treat your listeners better!

Duh, again.

Premiums are important to the financial health of non-profit broadcasting.
KPFK: great work. WBAI: shape up.

Tom
