In an area known as one of the safest communities in the
country, a hit list of African American students who would be "the first to
die" was spray-painted in a high school bathroom.
The racist graffiti was at Agoura High School in Agoura Hills,
Calif., a predominantly white community about 35 miles northwest of
downtown Los Angeles. The hit list is believed to have been painted during
school hours Wednesday, KTLA reports in the video above.
Before that, graffiti reading "Go back 2 Africa" was found and removed off of
the school walls on Sunday.
The hate crime made some parents wonder if it was safe for students
to go to school, even though extra patrols will be there all week. “Does (my
son) have to watch his back when he’s coming to school?” a parent asked CBS.
“(The suspects) win if our kids don’t come to school … they think
they’re scared, they’re afraid," another parent said to the station.
In the video above, KTLA interviews parents whose children were on
the hit list -- many of whom went to campus immediately after hearing
about the graffiti on Wednesday.
Some parents were upset that they were not immediately notified of
the racist graffiti when it was was found on Sunday. The school said the LA
County sheriff's department advised them not to notify parents because no
specific names were included in the first graffiti, ABC reports.
FBI agents may investigate the incident as a hate crime. A $1000 reward is
being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a
suspect, Patch reports.
Unfortunately, this racist incident is not isolated in Southern California. In
November, an African-American family was driven out of Orange County, Calif.
after they were repeatedly the victim of racist acts, such as rocks shattering
the windows of their home.
The Southland's growing racial diversity, coupled with the economic
downturn, has fostered a welcoming environment for hate groups in the
area, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).
This hate map from the SPLC shows that California, with 84 hate groups, has the
largest number of active hate groups nationwide.
