This event will take place at the Culver City Peace Center, 3916 S. Sepulveda Blvd. between Venice Blvd. and Washington Place (adjacent to the 405 and served by multiple Metro and Culver City buses, about 1.5 miles west of the Culver City terminus of the Metro Expo Line on the 33/733 Venice bus). This meeting is timely and urgent, because of the financial, political and internal threats to the future of the station, the network and the foundation. Last year, KPFK failed to meet quorum in the local station board elections for either listeners or staff, thanks in large part to delays by Pacifica Executive Director and interim Executive Director. While this creates a tremendous opportunity this year, because all 18 listener seats, and all six staff seats on the board must be filled simultaneously -- creating a rare opportunity for a fundamental positive change in the culture of governance, a re-commitment to the Pacifica mission, and an orientation towards community engagement -- the interim Executive Director has already failed to meet the bylaws deadlines for hiring an elections supervisor and made clear at the last Pacifica National Board meeting that she wants to scuttle the elections. the pretext for this attack on a key aspect of the unique character of Pacifica and KPFK and its sister stations as "small-d" democratic media institutions is the financial crisis resulting from diminishing listener support and increased expenses, particularly at WBAI in NY, which was damaged by Hurricane Sandy. But the long term trend is not due to the hurricane -- it is a product of the abandonment of Pacifica's cutting edge, community based programming, the silencing of grassroots voices of resistance, liberation and people's solutions. Pacifica is not NPR & cannot mimic it to achieve growth & stability. Our road must be one of identifying with and giving voice & platform to the cause of peace, justice, human rights & solidarity. If you are concerned about the future of KPFK, Pacifica, and free-speech, community radio dedicated to ending war and freeing people's minds, hearts, and spirits, then you can't afford to miss this meeting. And don't forget to pledge or volunteer during the KPFK fund drive that begins next week and continues through June 7, so that you are member in good standing, and can run or vote in the Local Station Board (LSB) elections. At the June 1 meeting, we will be presenting candidates for the Board, seeking others who will run or join the campaign, and charting a course to guarantee the survival of democratic governance and relevant, exciting, meaningful radio at KPFK and Pacifica.
