Legalization For All!
Make Three Calls:
1. Call Speaker of the House of Representative John Boehner
(Republican-Ohio)
at (202) 225-6205.
2. Call Representative Jim Sensenbrenner (Republican-Wisconsin) at (202)
225-5101.
3. Call the US Representative in your district by putting your zip code
in the box in the
upper right corner of this page:
http://www.house.gov/representatives/
Script
"Dear Representative ________"
My name is _____, and I am calling from [your city and state] to ask that you
support legalization now, end the militarization of the border and use of
drones and stop the deportations!"
Please be polite to the people answering the phones and ask them to write down
your information and your three demands for the Representative to see.
An Explanation Of Our Demands:
A Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill, weak on legalization and
strong on border militarization, has passed the Senate. The ball in in the
House of Representatives but the Republican leadership of the House has said
that there will be no immigration reform with legalization. It is up to us,
the people, to demand:
1. Legalization Now! The current Senate bill has a ten-year wait for
undocumented to become legal permanent residents. This and other barriers will
exclude many from legalization. Tell the Representatives to pass a bill
including legalization .
2. No more militarization of the border! No drones! Right now
hundreds of immigrants are dying trying to cross the border because the
militarization of the border drives people to harsh desert areas. The current
Senate bill will lead to military drones flying over millions of Americans who
live within 100 miles of the border, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Tell
the Representatives to oppose even more government surveillance. With the U.S.
government already tracking our phone calls and emails, we do not want drones
watching us around the clock.
3. Stop the Deportations!Under the Obama administration, there are
record numbers of deportations. Tell your Representatives to support a
moratorium on deportations while the legalization process is starting. Why
should the government deport more people and tear apart families who will
become legal residents?
An Explanation of Who We Are Calling
1. House Speaker John Boehner John Boehner has said that there will be
no immigration reform bill unless the majority of House Republicans support the
bill. But this majority of the majority is in fact a minority of the House who
represent districts that are not representative of the United States. Tell
Boehner that the people will remember if the House Republicans block
legalization for the undocumented.
2. House Representative Jim SensenbrennerJim Sensenbrenner is a member
of the House Judiciary Committee where any immigration reform bill will be
discussed. He was also the main sponsor of H.R.4437, a bill passed by the
House of Representatives in 2005 that would have criminalized the undocumented.
This bill helped to mobilize millions across the country in support of
immigrant rights in the mega-marches of 2006. H.R. 4437 also included many of
the worst features of the CIR bill passed by the Senate, including: 700 miles
of fencing, deadlines for the DHS to ‘control’ the border, mandatory use of
E-verify in the workplace, elimination of the diversity visa, and tracking all
entries to the United States.
3. Local RepresentativeLocal Representatives, both Democrat and
Republican, need to be told to pass a bill including legalization. Many House
Republicans have said that they would not pass a bill with legalization and
need to be told that people will remember if they block any bill. Many
Democrats have been following a strategy of making the bill worse, such as
supporting much more border militarization with the Corker-Hoeven amendment in
the Senate, and need to be told to make the bill better, not worse. Don’t
bargain away legalization!
