Romi, it’s incredible what McDonald’s thinks it can get away with. As if paying their workers poverty wages was bad enough, now they’re paying some workers with fee-laden debit cards even when they request checks.
More than 67,000 people have signed our petition, urging McDonald’s to cease this abhorrent practice. But this is one of the largest corporations in the world, so we’ll need at least 100,000 signatures to grab their attention. McDonald’s even admitted this, when it recently and infamously advised its workers to take a second job to pay the bills. But it gets worse. Now, they’re paying workers in “payroll cards”—which charge $1.50 for each ATM withdrawal, and numerous other transaction fees. If employees ask to be paid with a check, McDonald’s refuses. What is next, paying them in gift cards?
