What: Solidarity Rally, press conference and civil disobedience action to support the prison hunger strikers When: Friday, August 30, 4:30 PM Where: Outside CDCR-Parole Office, 2444 S. Alameda, Los Angeles 90058 Who: Initiated by the Black Riders Liberation Party and the Inter-communal Solidarity Committee, co-sponsored by the Council of Ujima, California Families Against Solitary Confinement, Inter-faith Communities United for Justice and Peace, International Action Center, Anti-Racist Action, Peace and Freedom Party, Jericho Amnesty Movement to free all political prisoners, Puerto Rican Alliance, OLAASM and LA Laborfest. Why: Hundred of California prisoners are putting their lives on the line in a protracted hunger strike, now nearly 2 months long, to win five simple demands -- an end to group punishment and to indefinite solitary confinement, healthy food, and a way out of isolation through education and work programs instead of by "debriefing" -- naming someone else to take your place in the SHU (Security Housing Unit). Some of these prisoners, like Hugo Pinell, have been locked away in solitary for decades, caged for 23 hours a day, unable to touch family members, often on the flimsiest pretext. Accused of being gang members, their "crimes" were having a book by George Jackson or a drawing of an Aztec princess, or being a "jailhouse lawyer" or organizer for justice and inter-racial unity. At least one prisoner hunger striker lost his life in the 2011 hunger strike, and another was found dead in his cell during this strike. Some people will be engaging in non-violent civil disobedience and others will be carrying out a militant "bring the noise" public demonstration to demand that Gov. Brown and the CDC-R meet the prisoners five core demands NOW before any more lives are lost. Letters and communications from the prisoner hunger strikers themselves will be read, and community activists who have visited and corresponded with the strikers will speak out, including Alex Sanchez of Homies Unidos, family members, and spokespeople from the Black Riders, ISC, and other participating groups.
