Congratulations, Leslie! I know the feeling of excitement one has when you are going to have a new pet family member in your house, and getting to meet them among a bunch of adorable little puppies. I remember that when we got our yellow lab, Diva twelve years ago. We saw the pups when they were three or four weeks old, and my mom said that once she saw all those faces in that box with all the pups, she knew we weren't going home without choosing one of them. They were two young to be taken home and away from their mother, but we immediately developed a connection with Diva, and a couple weeks later, she was ours to pick up. She was still young to be taken, only six weeks old, but she is such an incredible, maternal, intuitive dog who has been so fun and wonderful. She changed our understanding of dogs so much, showing us how human, or better than human, they can be. Unfortunately, I never had the puppy experience with my guide dog, Mark who is a labraddoodle from the Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown NY. I got him when he was almost full grown at 15 months old. He is an absolute love, and I think you'll find that a labradoodle is the best pet and companion you can find, along with pure labs. Mark is like a muppet with wavy hair, he's absolutely goofy and floppy, and he's loving and funny. You can almost see what he's thinking. You will enjoy your doodle so much. I really commend you for getting a dog before your children's fears of dogs get worse. Raising this puppy, and having such a wonderful dog will totally change their whole opinions towards dogs. I find it so sad when people haven't had the privelege of being raised around dogs, and are either terrified of them, don't understand how amazing they are and the souls they have, and when I walk with Mark and children scream in fear and hide behind their parents, I feel so bad because I know they will grow up being in fear of some of the most incredible creatures that we are blessed to have on this earth! All the best to you and your family. Please keep us posted on your experiences.
