However, we found that just dry kibble was not enough for our mama dog. She was nursing nine puppies!! We fed her five to six times a day and two of the meals were boiled hamburger (not the lean kind) and I did not drain off the fat. We did switch her from large breed to just regular Pro Plan puppy since she needed the extra calories. I also gave her plenty of yogurt (plain with active cultures) and cottage cheese added to almost every meal. I also added dry puppy formula from the can to her food mixed with some warm water for calories and calcium.
 
She had plenty of milk, looked great and was back to her normal weight by the time the pups left.
 
Also, once our pups were too big for the wading pool, we use a 36" wire crate and x-pens on top of plastic tarps/rubber mats with plenty of newspaper. The area needs to be big enough that the pups can crawl in and out of the crate and walk at least a few feet before getting to the newspaper to pee or poop.
