From what I understand it is mainly the fault of the AKC why dogs are still being tortured in the U.S. dogs who are cropped and docked are winning in the conformation ring because it is the breed standard and I think that judges are not used to seeing untortured dogs in the ring and seeing it as a fault and judging accordingly. Therefore, people are still torturing the dogs. I had an undocked aussie for 17 years and everyone thought he wasn't purebred because he had a tail. I have a friend who has an undocked rott and gets the same thing. People don't want other people saying "oh, your dog has ears/ a tail, so they must be a mutt" People don't like being told they have a mutt when they payed a lot of money for it. I can say that doodle people get VERY upset when they tell me about their doodle and I tell them that my mixed breed is the nicest dog I have. When they say "it's not a mixed breed, it's a doodle" I tell them my mix is a rare australian border husky. Fact is people would rather have a puppy that was tortured by having it's tail or ears chopped off than being told their dog isnt a purebred.
My aussie with a tail was awesome looking, I loved his tail and his mom and dad were both aussies, and he looked like an aussie, I am guessing that he probably really was one.
In my opinion, the only reason a dog should be cropped is for medical reasons, like it broke it's tail. Dogs use body language to communicate with other dogs and it is hard to read a dog who has been altered like this. Many times they are read wrong by other dogs and it starts a fight or people read them wrong and get bit. There is a rescue around me who docks rott tails if they aren't straight and sometimes docks them just so that they can adopt them out easier, this makes me barf a little bit.
That is great that Australia is so animal friendly. I wish that the US was a little more caring towards the animals.
