This pup is not mouthing the owners, he has bitten them no fewer than five times. Drawn blood with the delivery of a deep puncture. Not a puppy tooth scratch. Not a hard mouth.
I believe he can be worked with or I would not have posted his information here, but if he does not improve (and some don't), then difficult decisions will have to be made. Not many people want to live with a dog who is biting them regularly.
I also want to make it clear that these owners provided very good structure and early training. The problem here (and with many resource guarding cases) lies with the "nature" or genetic component of the dog's behavior.
I agree that having a structured environment is important for all dogs....but it doesn't make all problems go away.
If anyone is interested in seeing some very aggressive puppies and other guarders that were worked with extensively, check out the "Language of Dogs" DVD on Dogwise.com, it represents four years of work to help dog owners and professionals understand the subtleties of canine behavior and body language.
I do thank you all very much for your help in pointing the family towards possible rescue groups and individuals who may be looking for a lab/poodle mix and have the time to work with the issue he has.
