We have them taken off during the spay/ neuter, in puppies and adults. It does 
cause some pain but less than if they were to catch it on something when I am 
not home or while out hiking or something.

should be done with the first week some vet will do it up to 3 weeks. But if 
you have it done when they are older them that is it alot more trouble.  They 
will have to put the dog to sleep, and it is just more for the dog to go 
through. If you do it when they are puppies they don't feel it as much.
